Unfortunately I think City have managed to turn a potentially incredible summer into making our squad weaker than before.
In my opinion we were 2/3 players short last season so adding Haaland, Alvarez and replacing Fernandinho with Phillips would have left us just needing a full back. That would have given us a
squad of 2 players for each position that I believe would have been unrivalled. Also with 9 players on the bench and being able to bring on 5 subs we would have strength and depth like never
before. However we have gone on to sell Sterling, Jesus, and Zinchenko meaning we are still a player short in the attacking positions and are now 2 full backs short.
We also seem to be allowing some of our best youngsters leave and this is going to mean that our bench could be very weak at times this season.
Just look at yesterday, perfect time to give Wilson-Esbrand and Palmer an appearance against Liverpool which would be hugely valuable experience for later in the season but Pep won't rely on them in games of that magnitude and it is exactly that that shows how small our squad has become. You cannot count Palmer, Wilson-Esbrand, McAtee, Delap etc in our squad volume
as Pep will not play them in lesser games meaning when the big games come around they definitely won't be playing.
Realistically we have a squad of
2 keepers for 1 position
2 full backs for 2 positions
4 cbs for 2 positions
5 midfielders for 3 positions
5 forwards for 3 positions
In an era where teams are now able to realistically challenge for all 4 trophies we have too small a body count to cope especially at the business end and in a season where there is a World Cup smack bang in the middle of it.
We have an immensely talented group of players just not enough of them and also not enough in certain positions.
