Steffen is fine as a backup.

The issue is committing to playing the backups in the domestic cup competitions.

If Pep goes forward using Ederson whenever available, and Steffen isn’t prepared to be benched unless there’s an emergency situation, only then would we need a new keeper. And the above is unlikely.

That’s on Pep for playing him, in the name of squad harmony. I get it, though I also disagree with it.

Strongest possible XI, always, for me. If Ederson’s available, he should play.

But the USA #1 is probably as good as you’ll get for a backup willing to get 6-8 appearances a season.

Haaland + Alvarez should be enough upfront. The next priority should be a midfielder to replace Fernandinho and a full-back to replace a certain french left-back. That should be our window. Today showed us that we need more quality depth so we can actually challenge in 4 competitions.
