Because that's the only way I can make sense of potentially signing him. He's not a box-to-box midfielder like Ilkay was so he'd be added to the stable along with Rodri and Phillips. If he's coming to be Rodri's backup then it makes a hell of a lot more sense. If Kalvin is staying then I think we have far bigger needs elsewhere in the squad.

Ideal world is that Rice joins and Kalvin stays. Think he can be a real asset - both as a player and as a personality.

Another positive to if Rice came would be pissing Arsenal off no end.

I don't think Phillips is going to get much game time if Rice joins. Sucks for him but he'll be well behind Rodri, Rice, Kovacic and even Bernrdo (if he stays).
