It's Quiet the £250m return

Without a huge slice of luck/other players bailing him out - Akanji costs us both the treble and 4 in a row. I've never understood the hype around him. ANd his lack of recovery pace/desire to getback in is hugely concerning.

Again, as commented above, that's how the confirmation bias works: ignore the good things (great performances vs Bayern, Real and Arsenal, without them might have failed to win the trophies) and remember the bad things, as if the other defenders never make mistakes.

Huge era defining mistakes, though.

Solid games vs Bayern and Real are totally erased if Ederson doesn't save his bacon v Martinez in the final.

Regardless of what he says or does off the pitch at least he is on the pitch. Stones is redundant if he can't even get on the pitch....no matter how poor Akanji is at times ( and it was only last season) it's better than a player who isn't ever available.

If the experts can't figure out what is wrong with Stones then I'm not sure how it changes. Let's hope it does

Stones saying that for the first time in 2 seasons he feels very good and ready to go. I hope that's true and he doesn't have a start stop season again. He's done so much for the club integral in league wins and the champions league win.

He is our best centre back. That interview he did before the club world cup where he said his injuries were frustrating and the medical staff couldn't explain why. Just felt sorry for him the way he was decribing how low he felt, he wants to play but his body is just breaking down.

Not so long ago, I had nobody on ignore. Now, I have 15.
Since we finished in third place, some fans appear to have lost their sense of reality, or they are not really fans and just come here to wind people up. I am not sure which it is, but it matters not because I no longer see their posts, and I am happier for that.
I’ve just checked I had 4 on ignore for years but it’s now 35, about to be 36 with the idiot that is king jay, seems to be posting a lot lately and all of it shit. A proper brat

As an out and out defender Akanji is arguably one of the best we have. The problem comes when Pep tries to push him into midfield and replicate what Stones does for us.

Kinda surprising but our best outright defender is Ake. Stats wise he's the best defender in the team. At outright defending

I get what you're saying and won't argue because Ake has been outstanding for us but I don't really like stats for defenders because there's so much more to it. It's like how Sly always say Van Dijk has never been dribbled past but I remember Sane used to take the piss out of him.

Miscommunication between Akanji and Ederson, but you prefer to remember that, and not, say, his outstanding performances vs Real, Bayern or Arsenal, or the great pass to Bernardo before Rodri's goal in the CL final. It's how confirmation bias works.

Walker, rightly seen as one of our best defenders ever, made mistakes as well. Stones was too slow to react and played United on for their first goal in the FA Cup final last year. Mistakes happen. For example, Van Dyke cost Liverpool 100 pts with an absolutely terrible mistake at Arsenal in 2020.

Ederson was absolutely no where near him. It was Akanji's fault all day long.

This is how Pep sees him, as evidenced by Pep's decisions: and it's not like those decisions didn't win us the Treble and 4 in a row. The collective bias against Akanji is weird, he is not the reason why we didn't compete last season.
Apparently Pep is some failed clueless idiot, and certain cretins on blue moan know loads more about football than him

Chances we created in that club world cup was incredible even in the game we lost, made me think we need a sterling type winger. Hopefully Doku can do that after Kompany and Henry's advice. But wow we need a winger that just is in the right place at the right time. If prime Sterling was in this team right now wow he'd be scoring 20 plus in all comps.

Sometimes it's about luck. We created more chances vs Al Hilal than vs Juventus: scored 5 vs Juve and only 3 vs AH.

I remember a game in 20/21 against Palace. xG wise, we had just 0,99 or something like that, yet scored 4 goals .

I have a strong feeling that we will score a ton of goals this season, and it will mitigate the conceding of more than our normal level. I believe that a forward line of Haaland, Foden, Cherki, Bobb, Savinho, and Doku is going to do BITS!

The number of people who believe Pep is completely infallible and has never made a mistake is more impressive.

I don't think there are such people. Anyone defending Pep realises he isn't infallible. That's a cheap criticism.

Yesterday I wondered on here why Pep didn't see earlier than Nunes was a better solution to our RB problem than Lewis.

But the confidence that some on here have that they know better than Pep what he needs to do is completely inadequate.

Remember, some "knew" Pep was completely wrong to pair Rodri and Gundo in midfield. Worse, they "knew" Rodri wasn't good enough to help us win things.

Definitely luck, but the chances we were creating they were mostly balls across the 6 yard box to the back post , just remember Sterling would always be there for those. We just miss that type of winger that knows where to be at the right time. I rate Sterling highly his movement at one time was the best in the prem even Europe.

Definitely could do with a Sterling.

Savinho is pretty young, let's hope he learns how to make those runs and score from them. Doku too. Wouldn't be surprised if Reijnders or Cherki pop up in such positions too.
