I can’t figure out City’s allergy to buying a left back. It was clear the previous summer but we passed on Chilwell and moved for Angelino.
That didn’t work out so due to concerns over Mendy last season we looked at Chilwell again but decided not to pursue him.
We finished last season with concerns over both Mendy and Zinchenko, so much so Cancelo, our reserve right back, finished the season as our starting left back.
We bought Ake as he can play centre back, defensive midfield and left back. So we have 4 potential left backs, one of which is an actual left back who we wanted to replace last season, dropped him but are happy to keep him as first choice. Doesn’t make any sense at all.
As for Zinchenko, he might be our fourth choice left back but he’s keen to stay?
On the one hand I can see why he’d stay, he’ll eventually get some game time, he’s no doubt on a decent contract, being coached by Guardiola and is unlikely to be under pressure for his Ukraine spot. At the same time he’s not to develop much if he spends too long as a reserve full back.
It seems as though an awful lot of City’s future planning seems to be on hold pending Pep’s future plans. If he is waiting to see how the players respond to him this season, when is he going to decide? After 10 games? After 20? Hopefully we get clarity sooner rather than later because if he leaves we really need to be looking at the best to replace him.
