If Messi arrives, Mahrez would become redundant and at 29 I suspect there's still a market out there for him to get a decent fee of 50m+. He's also one of our top earners.

I see what you are getting at BUT there is a numbers game as well - we need to have squad depth as well - long long season.
Surprised he is one of our top earners tbh

Why? City planned to sign 9 in 2017 summer for example.

There will be at least 5 new signings, so six new players is not that wide off the mark.

Ederson, Danilo, Walker, Mendy, Bernardo... Who else were we going for?

It's interesting that the club came out and played that down, because Jack Gaughan said the same about a 300m gross spend, and he's pretty reliable these days.

The club made a point of dismissing it, although the optics of such a spend in the current climate could be a reasoning for it.

I understand it was The Athletic's claims that were dismissed, not sure who else might have picked it up elsewhere or wrote similar.

As you say Jack G is one of the very few City like to still court these days.

Haha - we did pitch the soccer schools idea to Kaka, but this would ceetainly be a different level.

I don't think we could go down the same path with someone like Messi, so readily identifiable as a Barcelona legend.

If I recall rightly, Neymar's £40m signing-on fee to PSG was paid separately, to become the global ambassador for the Qatar World Cup?

Could certainly see Abu Dhabi citing some kind of precedent, front-loading a massive part of his salary as a signing-on fee or giving him a small but significant percentage in the CFG (think about it...)

We would still have to pay him £500k a week salary through our own wage bill, purely for the optics, but the majority of his current earning power could be done well in advance and off the books.

Between us and the bedpost, Sheikh Mansour could push a button tomorrow that would see £50m land in Messi's bank account and another £20m to his dad.

Unless someone hacks Messi's banking details or he fails to pay the tax, there is fuck all our bitter rivals or Uefa could do about it.

This is why I've never held much credence to the Der Spiegel/ UEFA charges.

If any club truly wanted to bypass UEFA's rules, rather than doing it in a way which, if discovered, would leave them open to sanctions, there are many many ways of achieving that, without doing something piss obvious.

Aké, Torres, done. Koulibaly, Aouar seem pretty likely.

Messi is being worked on apparently.

A LB wouldn't surprise anyone. Nor would a GK if Steffan decides he wants to play more than 5 games a season.

He said 6 new signings this week all for the 1st team.

Again absolutely no chance.

I also don't see any rumours of Aouar being likely?
