Ok a sense of logic again for the second night running...
Both parties are sticking to their guns and both parties are perfectly right to do so. The way Barça have continually changed their stance from no clause to yes there’s a clause but dated, to now they’ll chase him under Spain’s working laws etc shows to me they know they are wrong but playing the big I am for the media. All the leaks they are giving are to known Barça mouthpieces and as such can be taken with a pinch of salt. Today’s a perfect example “Messi’s dad said he could possibly stay” yet his dad has since denied he said that. It’s a game of cat and mouse.
Now look at it this way, as I said a few days ago the contract was written by Barça’s appointed legal team, the same exact team who were sacked for telling Messi his options and who now represent Messi directly. Why would those who wrote the contract, who know it’s exact content, miss advise their client? Do the law firm have a good reputation, do they want the world knowing they are inept? No of course they don’t, and I genuinely think it’s the club or rather President digging in their heels in denial rather than belief.
I also don’t see him being reinstated as president so any threat he makes isn't worth the effort listening too as the guy likely to replace him has said he’d let Messi, a club legend, leave with his blessing... So you can see any legal battle would be dropped once he becomes the boss man and if I was him I’d promise Messi a friendly against City so he can say goodbye properly. Maybe a half for each team ;)
Messi needs to grow a pair and call their bluff as it’s all hot air, had they got a leg to stand on they’d of publicly started proceedings anyway as he’s refusing to train. City need to reassure Messi they have his back, give him the backing he needs and help him through this legally by letting our legal boffins check things over (I highly doubt they haven’t done so already).
It comes down to do you put your faith in to a known liar or the club we support? We would not of let this get to this point without being confident we could win.
Its also worth noting that at no point will ANY club be liable for €700m, it’s been acknowledged that no longer is relevant but FIFA/CAS or whoever will look at the fact he’s 33 in the last year of his contract and that Ronaldo went for €100m with 2 years left on his contract and he was younger. Any court will award money no doubt but the buying club would be liable for around the same €100m max I’d surmise, but most likely less.
Their president faces jail if he can’t repay the 25% of debt the club have once he leaves, there’s no way he can afford it and this is why we are seeing a desperate man fighting for his own freedom in reality. He is covering his own arse not the clubs and this is why it’s hot air! His thinking is, chase for the €700m and threaten that so he can repay the debt and walk away a free man... I’m willing to bet during the election process he disappears abroad to avoid an arrest but that’s a different story.
So the ball firmly is in Messi’s court, does he have the backing of City and does he have the stones to call Barça’s bluff? Me, I’d shout bring it all day long but I’m not risk adverse.
