I accept that he’d be loved by the MLS but that doesn’t answer the question.
The point I was referring to was a statement that said that, if we got Messi, his huge signing on bonus and a portion of his huge wages could be deferred until he went to NYCFC and then paid to him through NYCFC.
My though was that the salary cap (which is in fact a control system that annualises all cost involved in purchasing / employing / rewarding players) could frustrate such an intention.
So, as loved as he would surely be in the MLS, could NYCFC pay him £150+million per annum (deferred salary & signing on fee + agents fee and actual salary & signing on fee + agents fee)?
Would the other clubs in the MLS drag the MLS through the courts if they ripped up the rules to allow NYCFC to pay whatever they wanted to Messi?
I kinda doubt it because, to my mind, it would be directly at odds with the salary cap system.
However, I’ll be delighted if someone who knows how the system would deal with such a situation could please explain.
