No, that's what you don't do.
Take the hard drive out, Pearcey and put it in some other computer to check if your work is still there. It may just be your power pack overloading, hence the burning smell. Or a gel on your fan burning as a result of the overheating. If that's the case, I think it's harder to salvage the drive.
I'm not an expert, but I went through something similar a few years back.
