James McAtee

This loan overall has been a poor one

Disagree completely.

He's got loads of game time, he's learned a lot about the difference between boys football and professional because he was getting knocked off the ball and pushed around a little embarrassingly at the beginning. Fitness is obviously going up.

He's playing in high stakes games going for promotion and could yet even win something.

We have this conversation on the EDS forum all the time - a good loan isn't necessarily getting in the League 1 or Championship TOTY. It's about getting rid of deficiencies as much as highlighting what someone's good at - not to mention the whole mental side of it - seeing football away from the bright lights of the PL, where people are fighting for mortgage payments and seeing facilities at Kenilworth Road etc. Moving away from home, growing up, realising this is your job now.

Pep isn't going to care about his performances for Sheffield United when he gets back, he's going to care about his performance in front of him in preseason.

Anyway Sander Berge is getting sold, which should mean even more game time for Doyle and McAtee in the second half of the season.

Using Sheffiled United's playstyle as a reason for him not playing well is a poor reason.

Mind you, I believe he is coming back form an injury and has had an upturn since so I'm happy about that.

But down the line in this loan, playing against men can only be good for him, and we will see if he can rise above and show his quality.

Another potential benefit would be if he moves up the league with them, another season of loan but at a higher level.
