James Mclean, Sunderland fc

I actually feel sorry for McLean, what a shitty situation he's been put in. He doesn't wear a poppy he gets death threats off nutters and there's a fair chance if he did wear one he could have been treated badly in his home town where his family live and maybe more serious death threats off nutters. Fucked if he does, fucked if he doesn't.

Forcing him to wear one would be a hollow gesture anyway and completely against personal freedom anyhow.

Not having that mate. My two best mates are both Catholics lads from Derry and they both wear them over here also.

Just because they don't give him shit, doesn't mean to say that others wouldn't. It's an emotive subject there and it only takes one.

Personally, I stopped wearing them for a reason. Once upon a time they were merely to symbolise the fallen in the wars. Now it's almost becoming a jingoist trumping up of all things concerning the British Army. It's been sabotaged.

Do I respect the fallen in the World Wars, the Falklands etc? Absolutely. Do I want to show support for the British atrocities in Ireland, or their unwanted presence in many countries? No.

Therefore I am perfectly within my rights to discard the symbol and stick to my two minute's silence on Rememberance Sunday.

Lets not forget the men he is supposed to be honouring are the same men who killed 13 innocent people in his hometown, injuring many more.
The same men who occupied his hometown, forced a curfew upon them all, looted businesses, attacked peaceful civil rights demonstrators.

I'm sure he would have worn a poppy if it only represented the fallen heroes on WW1/WW2 but because of its links to the British army as a whole I don't think McClean will ever wear it. His choice

It's funny you can see who the bigots are on here, even if they try to be subtle about it.

Maybe the Army are the reason why over 17,000 of one side of the community have had to leave the west bank of his home town as well, and the 750 odd families are under attack nearly every week as well

He would, the area he is from in Derry, Creggan means he would get abuse. No denying it. It's not justified but it's the truth

Remembrance Sunday isnt just about the British Army. Its about everyone who suffered in the various conflicts...Irish soliders, Muslim, Hindu, German you name it. My grandfather was from Dublin and fought side by side with the Bristish in WWI, like thousands upon thousands of other very proud Irishmen. He was gased and held prisoner for 3 years.

Mcleans has lowered things to the lowest common denominator because he's an ignrant baffoon. How many innocent people from Sunderland died in the various conflicts. Does he not respect their memories.

You don't have to wear a poppy to remember the fallen - it's not compulsory. I'll give Mclean the benefit of the doubt until I actually hear him give his reasons. I understand that he got death threats when he chose to play for the Republic as opposed to Northern Ireland, but believe it or not many Catholics don't recognise the six Counties.

I suspect he may even be able to spell "ignorant buffoon" correctly.

What has the non recognition of the six counties got to do with wearing a poppy?
Fuck all...but at least his nonsense is spelt correctly.

It is his choice whether to wear a poppy or not but under such circumstances, being from a club with lots of ex or current Armed forces representatives, it was an error in judgement, especially for all those fans who feel they are supporting him.

The Poppy has become a symbol of respect for all those who have lost their lives in conflict, regardless of circumstance. Showing your allegiance to it is not mandatory, and rightfully so, but it does help to show a little more compassion and understanding rather than just batting it off as if it had no consequence whatsoever.

Please quote my whole passage or at least a whole sentence. That's ain't right.

My quote;

I actually feel sorry for McLean, what a shitty situation he's been put in. He doesn't wear a poppy he gets death threats off nutters and there's a fair chance if he did wear one he could have been treated badly in his home town where his family live and maybe more serious death threats off nutters. I stand by it completely he was put in an awkward position. These days death threats by people on twitter or whatever will probs be a sad fucking loner, wanking off to dog porn with a full United kit on. But I ain't had one.

Bloody Sunday.

Is that what he has said his reason is?

Not heard that officially I am speculating but he is from Derry and if his family is not pro British then I could imagine that the troubles in Derry may have had an influence on his thinking.

Dosnt stop him plying his trade and living in Engand though eh? Maybe just selctive morals...not forgetting he`s collecting his paycheck in British pounds.
