Everton plotting ambitious summer swoop for Manchester City midfielder James Milner

The England midfielder has struggled to nail down a starting place in the City side this season and Everton eye him as a replacement for loanee Gareth Barry

Everton want to sign James Milner this summer in an ambitious swoop.

England midfielder Milner, 28, has a year left on his £75,000-a-week contract at Man City.

He has only made 11 Premier League starts this term under Manuel Pellegrini, who has used him as sub 18 times.

Milner will now assess his future this summer if City do not give him a new deal and assurances about his first team prospects.

Already he has seen close pal Gareth Barry offloaded from Man City to Goodison Park , where he has thrived and help them to fifth.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is now hoping he can persuade Milner to follow Barry and has started discreet enquiries.

Milner's first choice is to stay at City after joining from Aston Villa in August 2010 for £26million.

But he only has two goals this term and has not featured in his central midfield role as much as he would like.

MirrorSport understands Tottenham are also monitoring Milner but the Leeds-born ace is settled in the north west.

Hope he gets a new contract, although he is inconsistent especially against lower half sides you need players with his attitude and versatility in the squad.

Milner is one you need at away games against lower teams playing their cup final when City comes to the town. He can be frustrating at times but those are games when you need someone who'll give 100% each time, and that's Milner.
