James Milner

He is our C.B.Fry
Charles Burgess Fry, known as C. B. Fry (1872 –1956) was an English polymath; "Charles Fry was probably the most variously gifted Englishman of any age." Neville Cardus wrote that he was "a national gallery and a theatre and a forum".

Fry was an exceptional scholar and it was expected he would achieve a first-class degree in Classics and enter the Indian Civil Service. His achievements on the sporting field included representing England at both cricket and football, an FA Cup Final appearance for Southampton F.C. and equalling the then world record for long jump. He also reputedly turned down the throne of Albania. In later life, he suffered mental health problems, but in his 70s was still able to perform his party piece: jumping backwards onto a mantlepiece from a standing position.

The resemblance is just uncanny. Our James was described as a "first class" student at his school; he left with 11 GCSEs and an award for his performance in physical education. Milner also showed talent in cricket, sprinting and long-distance running. He played for the Yorkshire Schools cricket team, was the cross-country champion at his school for three consecutive years and was the district champion over 100 metres for two years in a row.

He has the record number of U21 caps for any Englishman and last year played in a 9 different positions for Aston Villa, including both wings, in central midfield and even as a right back.

The throne of Albania awaits

My (rag) mate reckond that Milner was City's best player in the derby.

His talent and skill is very limited but that will only improve when he reaches his prime, his work rate however is unquenstionable always gives it 100%

You need players like Milner to compliment the flair ones. Mix and match.

He's a good player - just not getting the breaks at the moment.

Let's hope he's not becoming this years Stephen Ireland on here.

I can see similarities between Milner and the Lescott of 12 months ago, and not 'overpriced' or 'not a top 4 player.' Milner and Lescott came from Villa and Everton respectively as we all know, both missed pre season with us, and both of those sides play(ed) 'good old fashioned British football.' Direct, 100mph, 'get stuck in' style of play.

Now as we all know, Lescott didn't set the world on fire when he joined us, in fact if it weren't for Kompany being injured until November(ish) he probably would have been dropped from the side after his first few games, and in my opinion he struggled because he took time to adapt to our style of play, i.e use your brain. He was one of the main targets for criticism on here, until the 5th December when we played Chelsea at home. He was absolutely outstanding, had Drogba(the eventual golden boot winner) in his pocket all game. When Bridge went off injured Hughes even put Barry at left back instead of Lescott because of Joleon's domination. From that game until March (when he got an injury to put him out for the season) he was our best centre half and a cert for the England World Cup squad, if not the first XI.

Now it would seem Milner is taking time to adjust to our style of possession football instead of feeding off knock downs from a Carew/Heskey, but what I think he needs is a Lescott v Chelsea watershed kind of game, and then we will see the best of him. Especially now Super Mario is back and there will be someone in the box to actually get on the end of Milner's crosses. I have great faith in Mancini and Marwood's judgement regarding MIlner, and I have no doubt that his 'watershed game' is just around the corner.

Spot on post. Glad someone else can see the bigger picture

Yep,I think some of us thought we were getting the next Gazza.Milner is a young
solid pro, nothing more or less, admittedly he has only really shone in the game against the 'Pool but is a good albeit expensive player to have in your squad, and not the opposition's.

FFS its all about a team you can't have 11 Silva's running around playing the fancy football, or 11 NDJ knocking the sh*t out of everyone. Its called a team you need people who work together all with different skills they can bring to the party.

Milner is a grafter puts a shift in and can fill in number of different roles for the team. Get off his case FFS Milner is cog in the wheel and I believe a vital one at that.

Rant Over

Amen

millner has played in the PL 8 season and he's still very limited technically, I dont see how he can suddenly improve that much more than what he has now. Not every player that plays in small club can move up to better club and still succeed. lescott is a prime example, Millner is another one. parker is also another one
