Feeling optimistic about this. Even though we'd definitely miss the part of Ederson's game where his precision passing all over the pitch creates chances and gives us a new dimension, his overall tally of assists in his City career is 7 — while ridiculous for a keeper, is still probably a lot, lot less than the number of goals he should have saved but didn't over the years

So even if Trafford is not going to be Ederson on the ball, he's significantly better at shot-stopping and only going to improve in this area (while Ederson has been mediocre at best for two years) and on net, will help us win more points than Ederson does

I say give Trafford this season to prove if he can be our number 1, if it goes well, amazing, if it doesn't, we can bring in a top keeper to challenge him for his spot

With Trafford, rightly or wrongly, the hesitation comes because we have seen him play at this level and when he did play, he was largely awful

Now a lot may have changed in the past 12 months. But the reality is, we are buying a keeper from the division below who isn’t experienced at playing well at Premier League level and has never played at Champions League level

I hope he hits the ground running but let’s be honest, he probably won’t and there are likely to be teething problems

We basically saw YouTube clips. That seemed to be enough

Trafford was what 20? In his first season in the premier league, playing for a team that didn’t defend - surely you can take that into account? Or please name me another 20 year old first choice keeper

Most of the players we’ve bought recently aren’t experienced, never played in the premier league or champions league as well. The club clearly something in him and did from a young age

Sorry, I meant that what we saw from Kusanov on the pitch for City was largely positive

I’m not particularly down on the signing but the lack of experience is a concern

Re signings. Most of our most successful signings did have experience of the CL and or PL/top European league

Bernardo
Haaland
Marhez
Dias
Rodders. He took a year to settle, of the new keeper takes that long then we’ve a problem
Stones
Walker
Sterling
Etc.

This signing is a risk but given I’ve no idea who a close to risk free alternative would be, I’m happy enough

He’s clearly a confident chap with a good Championship season behind him
 
Would remind me in a way of how Joe Hart got his break. Had a great season with Birmingham who got relegated so probably not a million miles away from the quality of this Burnley side.

We had Shay Given, a Premier League proven quality goalie and nobody knew who would get the nod before that Spurs away game.

We all know what happened from there, Hart got MOTM against Spurs and never looked back. I’m all for taking the chance on Trafford, and it’s a bonus that he’s homegrown and club-trained.

The signings above of course had experience and turned out great, but then again our recent signings have all been about potential in my opinion

Khusanov, Reis, nico, savinho for example. I think he’ll turn into a top goalkeeper and our transfer strategy is changing, with the focus on potential

I'm not even sure he is a downgrade.

Trafford is a much, much better shot stopper than Ederson and if anyone says otherwise then they're lying to themselves. He's never been very agile and he's never had the quickest reflexes. That isn't getting any better.

No keeper in world football was as good as Ederson in possession but even that side of his game has declined a bit, despite him getting an assist record last season.

I think the problem people have is that Ederson is a known quantity, whereas Trafford is still making a name for himself.

We entertained interest from Saudi in the last couple of windows and it looks like Ederson's about to get snapped up by a Turkish club for a few quid. Whereas at least two Champions League clubs are pushing for Trafford.

It's not 2020 any more.
 
Last month I was unsure and I’d still have some reservations about him coming in as first choice. Partly because that would likely mean Ortega goes as well and I think we need a solid back up to push him, him to learn off and also help take pressure off if needed.

No doubt he could come here and be successful for a very long time.
 
The thing people speak about missing with Ederson is his distribution, but I think at least as big an asset is (or used to be) how quickly he comes off his line to sweep up danger when we play a high line. I say it used to be an asset as we seemed to concede less from having a high line last season than we did from counterattacks.

I've not seen much of Trafford tbf, so does he offer this at all?

What was everyone’s opinion of Eddie when he came over from Portugal? He wasn’t there long, didn’t have loads of experience but he’ll forever be an incredible signing and in my opinion our best ever GK.

Trafford has experienced international football (u21), played in the prem and had a stand out season in the championship. Theres enough potential for this to definitely be a serious signing. And if Newcastle are also sniffing around him being number 1 it’s not like this is a homegrown/club trained signing, this is a justified starting GK for years type of signing.

I think Trafford is 'pretty good', but I think really we should be looking for 'world class' as the target standard of our goalkeeper.

(In the CL, imo we were knocked out by RM a couple of times mainly because the standard of our goalkeeper wasn't at their level. Swap the goalkeeper and we would have gone through on the occasions we lost.)

I’m just talking about in general with what we’ve achieved with him in goal as without a doubt he’s been instrumental. I think his shot blocking is some times underrated then he has a howler. That CL final he was brilliant.

We’ve had some great keepers in our history so I don’t want to disrespect any of them. But it’s hard to rival what we’ve done in recent years let’s be honest.

Good old you tube. I immediately thought of his penalty saves.

I can’t really comment about his ball playing without watching you tube/games but he definitely has bags of potential. We’ll know, we can ask Vinnie as well. It’s clear he’s going to have a good career but how good is the question. He comes here and develops under pep then the sky is the limit as long as he works hard.
