£40m will make Trafford the 5th most expensive gk in history. He is not in the top 50 gks in Europe.

Sums up our transfer strategy in the past 3 seasons. Building a Europa League quality team
Having looked at the list Ederson only comes in at 36 so what does that tell us.....

I think we are negotiating as there was a sell on fee of 6 million or 25% I think, so probably trying to get that off the 40 mill. Since he's coming back to us. Newcastle were quoted 30 + 5.
Since Ortega is rumored to be going the other way I guess it could be some negotiating with "if we pay this you can pay that" as well.

Hopefully Ortega does go the other way to help the negotiations, but this time last year he had some decent suitors so I’d be surprised if he was prepared to drop to Burnley’s level.

From what I can tell and have watched I’d say his floor is probably ramsdsle level. But his ceiling is probably courtois level.

At 22 years old it’s impossible to see where he will get to but I think it is worth the gamble personally.

The fact he is hg and has a connection with the club makes it more appealing

I think Ortega will start the season but by season end Trafford will be the no1

Who decides who the top 50 goalkeepers are ? Fees over time and ability don’t correlate due to the fact not every player moves not every player moves at their peak and player values go up over time
He won’t be in the top 10 GKs in the PL. Maybe he might be in 5 years - but at the moment not good enough for an elite team.

If we are signing him to be first choice then it’s yet another downgrade signing

I hope Ortega doesn’t start as #1. I thought his performances this season, particularly Arsenal away, were really, really bad

Always best to pre judge with little evidence or I presume you watched a lot of Burnley last season and saw all his errors and weaknesses ? Please expand.

Sorry for butting in

Would it be fair to say if Trafford played for Spain U21s, was relegated and dropped in his first La Liga season but then regained his place and won the Secunda that if we bought him he would be going straight back out on loan and not into our 1st team?

I can’t get away from this being an odd signing. Maybe because no one else is out there but I can see it going very wrong very quickly

I think this is nailed on tbh, probably why the Newcastle deal never happened despite looking so close.

Also complete guess work but really do think it’ll be Ortega who goes not Ederson. No way we lose both in one window and I don’t trust these Gala journalists at all.

I know there’s been rumours surrounding Ederson, and I’m of the opinion he’s done as our undisputed number 1, but I reckon he’ll see out his contract and compete with Trafford this year. Will only improve both players, and if I’m Trafford I’m backing myself to dislodge Eddy before he leaves, he’s been very suspect for a good year or so.

Excited by the signing either way if it comes off. As people have said, seeing an academy graduate leave for game time, hone his craft and return a better player is great to see and if things go to plan will only benefit us in the future

still waiting for you to add some meat to the bones on this comment from you...

If we bought a 22y old Spanish GK who had been called up twice in the last few months the Spanish national team he would most likely not go out on loan no.

We are building a team for the future though. This signing is a signing with the future in mind. It's a signing for the next 3-5 years, not necessarily the immediate.

Called up but never played..

If he was never an academy product, do you think we would look at him? Is his HG status pushing him to the front of the (admittedly) small queue

I think this signing is a big of a risk you can get, if the idea is for him to he #1 V Wolves

I accept there are no risk free signings but this makes me just as nervous as if we were buying Spain’s 3rd choice keeper from Levante

I don’t know that’s my point I didn’t watch Burnley once last season, so can’t really make any judgement on his ability or temperament, I can only assume the club and our goalkeeping coaching team have, I don’t even know if the plan would be for him to go straight into the first team or not.
I’m just pointing out unless somebody has actually seen him and analysed his keeping because in a full season he only conceded 16 in 45 games it can hardly be littered with mistakes then saying he won’t be in the top 10 in the PL for 5 years is being negative just for the sake of it.
