I'm just wondering what assurances Trafford might have been given re game time THIS season. Will he be happy to be second choice for the majority of the campaign? If he'd gone to Newcastle, he probably would have replaced Pope as the first choice 'keeper there
Don't know, the Newcastle fans I know don't really understand why they were in for him and think he'd at least have started the season as number 2 to Pope. Not sour grapes either they were saying that a few weeks ago before we gazumped them.

Great signing.

Doesn't need to be in the starter conversation, is young with plenty of room for development yet can also pitch in on cup games and lesser UCL games while Ederson remains the starter. And when it's time to make the switch whenever that is, he should be ready to go.

I half joked about it a couple of months back, it just makes sense with the homegrown perspective.

I'm glad Ederson is sticking around, I think for 1 year it'll do them both some good. More learning opportunities for Trafford, competition for Ederson.

Probably means Ortega goes, which from a non-HG perspective is great but would wish him all the best, he's the best number 2 we've ever had and would start for a lot of teams. Newcastle should go for him.

Should also add a loan for Ortega wouldnt be the worst situation either.

Ederson more than likely goes next summer, you bring Ortega back as a solid #2.

City probably take £10m-£15m for him this summer though.

Maybe he wouldn't? Could see maybe a similar situation being offered by both teams.

We've probably said "Ederson is going next year, come in and play the cup games & where ever needed, and get yourself fully prepped to be number 1 for the season after. Who knows - you could even force your way in part way through this season if you play your cards right".

It’ll be a case of Ederson starts as number 1 and the first time he wobbles he’s out the team and Trafford is in. Very good competition anyway.

Exactly. No point only having one decent keeper, that’s far too risky over a season, plus the main keeper would become too complacent. There has to be competition for places in this team.

Ederson number 1, with Trafford for cup games and if Eddie loses form/gets injured. If Trafford does well then he keeps his place.

I don’t see Ortega as good enough really.

Not sure Ortega would be too keen.
Would probably depend on how a loan went or whether he'd be happy to return to rotation at a top club.

He could definitely start for a lot of decent teams, including Newcastle.

FWIW I think the club would sell first.

I personally think he’s here to be the number 1. Eddie (and maybe Ortega) will go and there’ll be another random Ortega-like signing later in the window.

We need a shot stopper now. One who happens to be comfortable on the ball but mainly good at saving shots.

Too often we dominate games but concede our first chance. Not a slant at Ederson/Ortega because usually the chances we concede and ‘high value’ ones (pardon the jargon) but they don’t tend to perform miracles. We need a keeper who has more chance of doing that.

IMO anyway.
Yes I don't think Trafford would have come to us instead of Newcastle unless he had been given assurances that he will be number one and I don't think Ederson will be willinb to stay as a number 2. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Eddie stays.

Big yikes for Newcastle if he hasn't been assured of decent game time. Ideal scenario you would expect would to see him slowly introduced to the team as the season progresses, then he eventually ends up as the number 1 by the end of the season. Use Ederson to take the pressure off.

I was wondering too.

I guess all FA Cup and League Cup for a start.
