Have to say mate, goalkeeper is there to stop goals, not to assist. Eddie had 5 assists in his time with us, a good keeper can make two saves that may be goals in one match
A keeper isn't purely about stopping goals, that hasn't been the case for a long, long time

The way I see Trafford is his floor is probably ramsdale level in which case we can flip him in a few years and get a tidy profit or he reaches his ceiling which imo is courtois like level. That would obviously mean we have a world class keeper for next 10/12 years.

It’s worth the gamble imo

Thankfully I look at it entirely differently

he isn't signing to be a backup keeper.

Even for 12 months
Mamardashvili signed for the dippers for more money, with more experience as Valencia's number 1 to be their backup to Alisson for the immediate future. Why wouldn't Trafford do the same?

If he wants to play for City desperately as is suggested, why wouldn't he be willing to wait a year or 2 with the chance to play and impress when called upon over signing for Newcastle on a 5 year deal and then either they arent willing to sell or we arent willing to pay the premium in a few years time.

He's 22, got 15 years ahead of him, theres no rush on his part. Signing initially as backup puts himself in prime position, it rules out any off the pitch factors in determining whether he becomes our number 1 for a decade and beyond, it's now purely down to him and his performances in training and on the pitch, why wouldn't he go for that?

Is it just me, or are City building for a future without Pep

I just get this feeling Pep will leave next summer and City will have a stock of players that can play other ways
james-trafford is a very good keeper but I would say in the style of a Joe Hart rather than Ederson

Also, this Alexander Isak rumour and players hoping to stay like Grealish, it feels like the Club know something and doesn't want to sell players or release players just yet
No, Trafford isn't Ederson nobody is, but he's a lot nearer to Ederson than he is Joe Hart. Don't think there is one player we've bought that isn't right for both Pep and whoever follows him ( in 2 years).

Wonder if he'll take the no. 1 shirt? It's been free for years since Bravo! Would be a statement.

If he doesn't he should take Carson's no. 33!

No, but Trafford is no more a risk than Ederson was when we bought him.Any keeper signing carries some risk.
While every keeper comes with some risk, I think it is not a fair statement that Traffors is no more risk than Ederson.

He might not have been known to many here, but he was a much more eatablished and tested keeper when we signed him, including at Champions League level.

He also came in to replace Bravo. Trafford is coming in to replace Ederson, so straight off the bat, the balance isn't the same.

For the record, I am excited about Trafford coming. But we will need to accept the risks, and also be patient.

So the plan is obviously. Ortega leaving. Which im sure we get 13 mill for which completely covers the trafford fee. Eddie stays leaving on a free next summer ( better than 3m from galtasaray) Trafford learns from Eddie this year playing plenty of games too. summer 2026. Trafford citys number 1. New number 2 signed .
Not a chance we get £13m for Ortega, especially with a year left and us having to sell.

He came on a free, so we've lost nothing if he leaves the same way, allowing a club to pay him a signing fee and lower wages if that works for them. He's been a key part of a squad that won everything and was a major reason for our last PL win when Ederson was injured, so he can leave with a load of medals and our thanks.

Pep will not be here next summer

I think the club are already overriding him by having a bigger squad, City will not make the same mistake again of not having enough players of quality if an injury crisis happens again,

Pep and City will have an in-house fight with so many players at the club, Pep hates having to say sorry you're not in the squad, i think its 34 players city have at the moment ??

Maybe we have signed him to play a different style , more long ball than pass pass pass with the defenders get the ball up the pitch quicker.

Decent signing, hopefully Ederson stays for one more season and we have 2 good keepers fighting for the no 1 slot.
No question Ederson will remain number 1 this season if he sees out his contract. Hopeful Trafford will be good enough but feel he’s a big gamble for us. Quality wise I don’t think he’d have ever have been on our radar if it wasn’t for homegrown status.

Trying to be optimistic about Trafford. Thought he was quite poor in the Prem, being dropped for Muric in the second half of the season, but at the same time he was only 20/21. Obviously vastly improved last year, albeit in a lower division.

Surely it's Eddy first choice for next season with the idea of embedding Trafford long-term. Feel like we should have grabbed an established keeper but maybe Viana saw no one on the market of City's calibre. Costa is one that springs to mind, but it makes sense to take a chance on a younger keeper with big potential too.
