A very shrewd way of loaning out a player for a few years ;-)
Yeah you can look at it that way. I do think clubs are far more committed to playing and developing their own players than loanees, though. They have skin in the game to justify the transfer fee and the make sure the player is successful

Don't see it, he left to get Number 1 position to be brought back to not get it straight away! ha

IF, and a big IF thats the case, he would of been better off staying at Burnley another 12 months, the clubs could have arranged for a deal to take place.

Not a chance Trafford sits as number 2, he would of been number 1 at Burnley, number 1 at Newcastle and consistantly plays for england u21s and in the main england squad.

There are a lot of people excited by his potential but we have to be realistic. The lad has played one season in the premier league, a season where his manager had to bench him half way through to take him out of the firing line. This is a huge season for the club, Pep and Viana. There is no way they will risk Trafford as number one straight away.

One season is not a long time for a goalkeeper of his age. Particularly if he has been guaranteed a certain amount of game time across all competitions. He will have weighed it up, with Ederson highly likely leaving next summer if this goes to plan, in one year he will be number 1 at a club fighting to win the PL and CL every year and almost certainly England number 1. There is no better alternative for him.

I'm excited for this.

The jump from Championship to Prem title contender is obviously huge, but Trafford is a player. He's not Ederson, but he's better with his feet than people are giving him credit for, and he's a good shot stopper as well. Interested to see if Eddie is off as well or hangs on for another season.

You can't understate the value of having a young, club trained player as a starter. Especially at keeper where he could conceivably start for the next 10+ years.

I'm also learning he was born in a town called Cockermouth. The jokes write themselves.

Now that we got him I really hope he proves that he can be on the level of Costa who in my opinion we should've gone for. He does seem to have the agility and confidence.

It's a great deal. As good as Ortega has been for us, and let's not forget how we were marvelling at having two world class goalkeepers for the first time in years, to replace him now with a home grown, club trained, international level potential talent, is just a great move.

It also means one less exit from the outfield team so less need to rush something there, as well as the potential to have England's number one represented by city again.

If we now get £13m for Ortega then we're laughing, a net zero deal.
Nice we are run in a sustainable level headed way, unlike some other clubs who are spending like a fat kid in a cake shop

We won't have a squad of 34 when he season starts, it will be 25 ish. 17 NHG, 3 or 4 HG, 3 CT, 2 U21. Can't think of one good reason he'd leave next summer.
He did reportedly prevaricate when Wirtz's team asked him about his plans, no idea if there's actually any truth in that though

Aren't Villa supposedly asking around £40m for Martinez?

They might be asking but wether they’ll get it is a different matter

However, I agree with your central point. £13mil for Ortega is reasonable. If we accept that someone will have to pay something and anything <10mil isn’t what Premier League teams do then 13mil is fair value

don't get me wrong, i'm happy he's signed.
but, for what they're worth, his stats with his feet are terrible when compared to either Ederson or Ortega.
It's worth noting that both of these stats are against weaker opposition for Trafford.

Joe Hart was let go because it was thought he wasn't good enough with his feet.
Bot Hart and Trafford are/were excellent shot stoppers.

Hence me wondering how their stats compare. That's why.

Not to criticize him, just to wonder at Hart being let go.
Those passing stats will be heavily skewed by the defence he is playing with and the way he is encouraged to play. No doubt his Stats will improve at City. If he can make sensible decisions with his feet and be a better shot stopper then I am happy with that. As people have pointed out, anybody would have been a step down passing wise from Ederson.

I just enjoy massively when academy players get the chance

Me too, but I think most importantly, he's earned it. It's not easy for me to see what the down side of this deal is. Sure, he needs experience in the PL, but he'll get it and he'll be well coached. And… no offers for Ed as yet. Ed staying, and young James giving him competition, would be a good scenario, as far as I can see.

Why are people so convinced he would he replacig Ortega, or rather that Ederson is definitely staying.

Aren't Villa supposedly asking around £40m for Martinez?

Yeah. But he's a World Cup Winner, established PL player/number 1 and his contract ends in 2029.

They might get £40m (though I doubt it) but for an outfield player with the same pedigree, it would be double that.

Not entirely sure why keeper fees are so low to be honest.
