James Trafford

I really wouldn't be surprised if James Trafford was our No.1 goalkeeper next season as there’s still alot of talk surrounding Ederson regarding his future, Trafford obviously has to prove himself at this level and nobody really knows how he's going to fair out although there's only one way to find out.

The main thing about this signing is Trafford wanted the move to City, He chose us over Newcastle and being realistic he'd have far more of a chance playing regularly at Newcastle as I don't think Pope is much use.

Trafford seems ambitious and feels he can play at this level. Let's hope it all goes to plan and welcome on board young man.
I think the ratio of playing time between Ederson and Trafford will be influenced by how much the Brazilian pushes a move away (assuming he ultimately stays of course). Pep will reduce the playing time of any player who wants away.

His reflexes are crazy.

Wow, never playing for city he needs to start for England, we might have a chance in a penalty shootout!

Joking aside I can see some of those teams built for hitting us on the break having a problem converting their limited chances with Trafford between the sticks.

Worried about this, not because Trafford specifically but more keepers just feel very high risk... its hard to know what you're getting because stats are so club dependant, the keepers with the knot saves are always the ones nearer the bottom as they get more shots against them because their outfield players are shit

What I saw of Trafford in the Prem was frankly really worrying and think there is no way he can be our #1, but didnt see any of his i nthe Championship last year where he on paper has excelled and at 22 I cant blame him for struggling in his first Prem season

So definitely worried...but not like I'm enjoying either Ederson or Ortefa...

This signing really could go either way.
I’m all for it in any case, think Ederson has kinda mentally checked out this last 18 months and we’re in need of a change.

Whether Trafford is the answer only time will tell. He looks the part though. Raw, and will have mistakes in him early on no doubt, but the core attributes are certainly there and from his interviews he certainly has that self belief/arrogance a top keeper needs.

The idea of having a young English lad from the academy who’s left, improved and returned with ambition to become our number one is really encouraging and exciting though. Ederson staying this year, seeing out his contract and leaving with a nice send off whilst smoothing over the GK transition is an absolute perfect scenario tbh.

If he leaves and Trafford is thrown in as our number 1 this season I hope our fans stick with him and give him time. Takes some balls and self belief to turn down a guaranteed starting spot and transfer to a club like Newcastle in favour of nailing down a spot for us, the club that ultimately let you go a few years back.

Young, academy lad, great shot stopper, has opportunity to learn from Ederson & Pep AND gives us more flexibility with our RB search? What's not to like
Plenty of posters on here seem to be questioning this signing to be fair. Way more than some of our other recent signings (most unproven). Maybe if his name was Traffordinho they’d like it more ;)

Personally think it’s a brilliant signing

The price is so low its very low risk.

Ticks a lot of boxes and happy to give him a chance. If he fails to produce next season then we know when Eddie leaves that we need another.

Ortega has been brilliant and helped city win the league with the son save but he is not good enough for no 1.

What’s the worst that can happen, it’s not a long shot for him to be better than current Ederson.

He’ll retain his resale value in a year or two if he isn’t good enough.

don't get me wrong, i'm happy he's signed.
but, for what they're worth, his stats with his feet are terrible when compared to either Ederson or Ortega.
It's worth noting that both of these stats are against weaker opposition for Trafford.

Joe Hart was let go because it was thought he wasn't good enough with his feet.
Bot Hart and Trafford are/were excellent shot stoppers.

Hence me wondering how their stats compare. That's why.

Not to criticize him, just to wonder at Hart being let go.
Joe would beat him hands down in kicking the ball out for a throw-in; JH is still a legend, though. having a GK that can save again is just as special as pinging the ball out for an assist and will stop the awkward time-wasting between Dias & Akanji :-)

I really hope the Trafford return works out and he’s given time to grow into the team. I’ve never understood why goalkeepers cant rotate, we do it with every other position.
We should have gotten him to change his name as part of the contract though.

Joe Corrigan was my favourite player when I first became dyed a Blue. Signings like this gives me warm feelings
I remember asking my dad why Joe was not in goal after noticing a GK with ginger hair (Keith McRaigh), after Joe had a bad patch.
One of the best saves I ever saw was at home and Joe saved this tremendous volley from Stan Bowles, who had been asked where his wife was by the crowd when he was taking a throw in, he shrugged his shoulders haha!
