I think you have to be a Mancunian to love Manchester. I do think that the Club could do a hell of a lot more to settle the players in and get them familiar and understanding of the City though. It's not London, Paris, Milan, Madrid etc, but it can be appreciated. I know what they do at the moment and it is very superficial and doesn't engender any real familiarity with the culture, atmosphere and history of the City.
Something I and I know a few others, would like to get involved with.
I take your overall point, but there's plenty of non-Mancunians who grow to love and appreciate the city. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea and those to whom the weather is of significant value, especially so, but it has a vibrancy, swagger and a idiosyncratic charm, along with a world shaping history, that makes it punch enormously above its weight, particularly if you 'get' what it's about.

It's also worth saying that's it's very much a city 'on the up' which usually makes a place an enjoyable one to be part of.

I'll definitely be moving back in the next few years.

I have lots of friends who moved to Manchester from other parts of the world for uni or work or other reasons and just never left. It's an immensely livable city for the average person: everything is close, disposable income is high for the UK, the amenities and leisure activity opportunities are very good indeed for a city of its size.

However, if I were earning £80k per week and the best option for me was to spend my Friday nights in Hale or Panacea, I would be extremely disappointed.

Points taken - compared to other UK Cities it is a great place, if you allow yourself to get to know it. I'm just thinking that compared to some of the World Cities these guys could opt for - it is perhaps an acquired taste.
Being a Manc I love it - but sometimes when you go on business or on City breaks around europe you can't blame players for either opting for them instead or not being overly enamoured by first impressions of Manchester.

I think most of the spine of our team aren't the social butterflies that are probably more drawn to the big lights of London, for example. Not everyone is arsed about how good the nightlife is somewhere - unlike me!

You may well be right about that. I would imagine the weather and restaurant situations to be more important to a lot of players.

If I was good enough, and I wasn't a City fan, the idea of playing football professionally in a city like London (or Barcelona; never liked Madrid tbh) with the quality of bars, restaurants and women available would be a difficult one to resist :-) The weather is well down my priority list!

I saw Javi in Piccadilly Gardens about 12 months ago. To say he stood out like a sore thumb would have been an understatement. He looked like a male model surrounded by muggers, pigeons and me on my way to Greggs.

I can kind of see where he is coming from. As a born and bred manc i love i, but i guess to a newcomer it can seem a bit underwhelming. He should have seen it 25 years ago!!

To be fair, every major city has a bad part of the city centre, so your argument doest stand up. I have been to Milan and Barcelona and they all have shit parts of the centre. Milan is vastly overrated.
Manchester is the one if the most invested cities in the world at the moment, so people see the potential.

What's not to like?
The rain
Feral bog eyed toothless locals on Market Street
A big issue seller every 10 yards
Oompa Loompa coloured Big Fat Gypsy Wedding girls
Puking in the street
Pissing in the street
Classy limos full of cackling women
Not one Michelin star restaurant
Queues to get in anywhere after 10.00
Magic bus pollution
Mooses
Manginas

Being a Manc I accept the above run alongside the genuinely great aspects of the City - but could put others off.

It certainly is - and you've been sorely missed!

Don't worry, I'll be back soon enough!

Still make quite a few cameo appearances too - like this Sunday!
