Fab Cafe (always ok when you are stuck for somewhere to go)

i really like it in there. music is not so great, the stuff i'm into doesn't get played anywhere in the bloody world anyway.

I know, it's always a bitch to find somewhere that plays Sade, and a bit of Nik Kershaw ;-)

Spent most of my saturday night/sunday morning in there back in the early 80's, before it moved upstairs to Fagins. Would get home from a City game home or away and then do the pub crawl in any of the following, The Beer House, Rosies bar, Sportsmans, Corbierres, Town Hall Tavern, Square Albert, The Vine, Lass O' Gowrie, Salisbury, Mother Mac's, Nags Head, Rising Sun, The City, The Vine, Tommy Ducks, Shakespeare, The Sporran, The Old Garratt, but always ended up in Jilly's and loved their Chicken Curry.

Danny, Malcolm and Sarge on the door always a great night. Met my best mate in there whilst headbanging to AC/DC and the daft sod picked me up on his shoulders and we did a tour of the club ala Angus and Bon and we've been the best of friends ever since. Met Lemmy in there and still got his autograph on a pie stained paper plate.

Many a night spent throwing up in the toilets (often in the ladies) met some wonderful people, many still great friends today and it was those relationships that made it all so special, some gorgeous rock chicks and eventually married one.

Gonna go home and blast out AC/DC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You - in honour of my youth.

Newcastel Brown R.I.P.

Blue 2112....are you me.....? Lmfao.....that mirrors my Sat nights (with Phoenix and UMIST thrown in) too......

As for FAB Cafe.....it's a cool place, but that life size Dalek stares at me.....still have a phobia of them from being a kid.....

have you been spying on me!

lol

Lets face it, a playlist that hasnt changed in 10 years, relying on regulars who must now be hitting 40, with high drink prices, high entry prices, broken speakers and barely legal electrics. It's hardly a surprise.

Yeah, it was a decripit old place, with an old (loyal) clientele in the main, but plenty of youngsters too.....but it had more soul and history than a hundred other Manc clubs that it has seen come and go......INCLUDING the Hacienda. (and never the trouble or hassle that, and other places had...)

used to love Jillys on a Thursday night and the Phoenix on Weds and Fridays, but many many moons ago
i was in Jilly's one night when a mate told my i had to re-sit an exam the next morning that i knew nothing about, left there at 2.30 and went in for the exam the same morning.

totally different part of town

This is bad news for the town.

It was the most diverse and safest club you could go too playing a variety of genres in its 4 rooms.

The Gold Fish Bowl was my favorite, most of the time.

To be fair, I never put more than £10-15 over the bar at Jilly's, plus the £5 on the door. It was still a brilliant place to be about 8 years back.

Rafters and Fagins were on Oxford Street near the Odeon
Used to go to Jillys for the rock night, and Rafters for the live punk bands

saw elvis costello there and got the shock of my life when i saw my german teacher, didn't realise teachers went out
played pool against billy idol in the back room, now that was scary

great times indeed

All us old punk rockers are out tonight!

THREE BRIEF POINTS

ONE: The whole business/tenancy, including Music Box, has been liquidated. I had a call about hour ago from my best PA fella in a panic about a venue. I told him that the days of independent clubs and venues are finished, and they are. I say that with a very heavy heart.

TWO: Some respected posters are lamenting the demise of venues/clubs for the kids who are old/young enough to be our children. It is sad times indeed. A world without youthful rebellion and enthusiasm would be a dull and compliant world. Fuck that and forget ONE. The kids will find a way.

THREE: Mancmakem, thank you for your kind words. I saw the writing on the wall a while ago and am now soft shoe shuffling into an upmarket restaurant as I write. And, yes, I have the World Cup in mind.

BTW If you didn't know, Aqua Bar has also been closed down.

ALL I can say is that we should all make every effort [hard or impossible as it can be] to not sponsor the chains. They don't need or deserve it and have friends in high places...
