.....and why not, they are apparently ‘flush with cash’

.....oh errr, well, err, errrr

2018 article.
Atlético Madrid is reportedly on the verge of an agreement with Carlos Slim to restructure the club's debt of €163M ($202M) to the Mexican magnate, according to MUNDO DEPORTIVO. Spanish publication Cinco Días reported the club is finalizing a deal to change the timeline of its payments to Slim-owned Inbursa. The original agreement called for the sum to be paid off over four years, in installments of €40M ($49.6M) per season. The new loan, "which maintains the same interest rate of 4%, will extend the repayment term to a decade." Under the new agreement, Atlético will pay €16M ($19.9M) per year through '27. Cinco Días estimated that the club's total debt is €585M ($725.6M) (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 3/6).

It's a strange move, for me, but likely to get more minutes under Simeone with the talent drain they are undergoing than with Pep at City. Still, developmentally I think it's a poor decision but football & the money these days is absolutely bonkers. 120M for a player who is very raw and only been playing regularly for less than a season

It seems mendes will pocket €30m of the fee as well! Like you say, football is fucked these days with the money now involved in it?!
