Bernardo played in a much deeper position at Anfield just last season, almost as a second #6. In my opinion that was to ensure we had enough numbers in the middle to allow Walker and Mendy to push wider and higher to give Ederson an out-ball if the short passes to Stones, Laporte, Fernandinho or Bernardo were suffocated by Liverpool’s press.Guardiola deploys an extra midfielder when there’s going to be a heavy press to compensate, so there’s no need for our midfield to drop deeper. Like having Gundogan on the wing (vs Liverpool? I think) a few seasons ago. When we play against Klopp and Pochettino any predicted line ups and tactics go out the window anyway, so my theory is redundant for those games.
Cancelo just gives us a more technical player as Walker isn’t the best at playing in tight areas whether it’s due to a high press or because he’s asked to make up the numbers in central midfield. If Cancelo plays at Anfield this season I guarantee we win the game in open play, even if Mahrez is on penalty duties once again. Liverpool wouldn’t be able to cope with that tactical fluidity.
