Don't want to start an argument because I am a huge admirer of VK but the fact is that leaving aside his chronic injury woes he also has been in decline in recent years. I hope I am wrong but he is unlikely to ever be as good as he was 4/5 years ago again. That said if he can stay fit he will still be better than many other defenders and may have a role.
Bonnuci, Godin and Pepe are the best three in the world

He had an iffy season trying to do everybody else's job because of the complete & utter shambles that old fuckwit had put together. When he then settled down to do his own thing, he was again, fantastic but then the injuries kicked in.

All of our cbs look better next to Kompany than next to each other. Reason being, he is miles better than all of them.

Then Pep is deliberately picking inferior players.

If Stones was as good as VK, which he isn't. Then there is still the position next to him.

Are folks on here going on record as saying Kolarov or Otamendi are better central defenders than Vincent Kompany ?

Not at all mate. Kompany is the best centre half in the football club.

My view is that Pep will not see it in the same way though.

I'm not sure Otamendi is a Pep centre half either to be honest.

Personally, depending on outgoings, I think we will go back into the market for this position.

I still don't think the club have given up on Bonucci.

Fit means fit, not going missing all the time.

If he gets fit, no manager in their right mind would leave him out of this team. It would be madness.

Depends on how good a partnership develops during his absence I guess. I think he'll get his chances over the next 12 months but he may have to wait his turn. Of course if Stones and Otamendi/Whoever can't form a decent partnership, he'll be straight back in no doubt. However, I could see him on his way next Summer if he has the same kind of injury problems as last season.

Well I don't think we will sign another cb & I agree Otamendi isn't the kind Pep would sign. Pep is talking about playing him against aerial long balls. If VK was fit, he'd be playig tonight. Ota has a good leap, but he's like Vinny's weedy little brother by comparison.

Well so far the partnership is Kolarov & Stones & Vinny is due back in a few weeks.

The old fossil would have had Kompany in the team now if he was still here.

He was sat in the bbc studio during the euros. I'm pretty certain he's tried to keep as fit as possible during the summer break and I'd love to know his actual state of fitness as we stand.

Look at Iker Cassillas: Genuinely thought of as one of the best 'keepers in the world in his prime. Played 725 games for Madrid's first team and 167 games for Spain. Came through the Madrid youth team and played for Spain at every age group. Club captain, national team captain. Lifted many trophies as captain of both teams. As recently as 2012 he won La Liga Best Goalkepper award. Easily in the top ten of Real Madrid's legends and they're the most successful club in European club football history.

He still plays, but not for Madrid. He's at Porto. Things change. Even for club legends.

Just signed Pablo Mari from Tarragona - but he may well be going into the loan machine! City for a day. I do think Komps and Ota are Pep-type players, without the right direction previously.
