Kinnear actually was doing a decent enough job at Newcastle when he was in charge until his illness. It was Sir Alan Shearar who was in charge when they went down yet Kinnear got the blame on it.
Director of football is a stupid tag. A joke job. Kinnear is old school which might not be a bad thing to bring into Newcastle. They are lacking a backbone and mayber this could be the guy who could put some sort of back bone into there set up. Pardew will be managing the team so he will have a say of the players he must do.

It is odd DoF immediately springs connotations of continental management business man like PR and quietly going about one's business yet some notable exceptions to that rule are people like Barry Fry at Peterborough and in the context of that club's situation he hasn't too badly despite being an utterly dislikeable bastard. Joe Kinnear didn't actually do too badly when managing at Wimbledon, maybe he will get on better behind the scenes where the stress and strain of football won't pose as great a risk to his health.
