Joey Barton

So why don’t they ever choose intelligent, erudite ex-players from the lower leagues? I’d have no problem with that.
They're welcome to and perhaps they should. But for now people seem to be accepting of any old shite providing they have at least played at the highest level.

I do think Joey’s original tweet having a go at the clueless vlogger was uncalled for though as I’ve always been told that famous people shouldn’t “punch down”.

To be fair, it shouldn't need anyone to tell you that it's not ok for 41 year old man to publicly ridicule a young woman to his audience 2.8m people for simply doing her job. Not even sure what his point was anyway. She's not employed as a pundit and her content isn't aimed at his demographic. It's for kids.

1. It didn’t need anyone to.

2. That’s her job? Never seen her before (which is fine as I’m not in her demographic apparently), but she was talking shite, just like most “social media football vloggers”, City or otherwise.

You implied that you had decided his comment was uncalled for because you've been told celebrities shouldn't punch down.

And yes, she is trying to build a career out of creating online content. And regardless of whether you think she's talking shite, it's just massively shitty of him to single her out because she's a woman. She's literally doing no harm to anyone so and doesn't deserve to ridiculed on social media by some arsehole trying to create a diversion from the fact he was trying play down a racially motivated murder committed by his brother last week. If younger audiences like that sort of thing then let them crack on.

I think there are lots of crap pundits both male and female. Izzy Christensen is very good for example. Eni Aluko isn't. Nothing to do with gender but that's just me.

Broadcast companies are also ticking boxes rather than selecting the best people for the job.

Broadcast companies are commercial ventures and they've realised that audiences want and prefer a range of voices and styles rather than more of the same. It's not box ticking, it's about representing their audiences better and giving people what they want.

Think what a lot of people forget is that, nowadays, the divide between men and women at your average Premier League game is probably at about 65% men and 35% women (admittedly I'm a bit skewed/biased cos I go with my mum and I sit near the Family Stand). Whereas at women's games it's about 90% women and 10% men. Women have more of an interest in men's football than men do in the WSL. It's only fair enough imo that women's interest in top level football is reflected in the make-up of the folks sat round the pundits table.

8:2 men to women apparently.

Thought obviously that may have changed from that report.

This says 7:3 for tv viewers.
