Joey Barton

No it isn’t, it’s 100% box ticking, I couldnt care any less who does what and why but all forms of media have been ticking boxes for years and will continue to do so ad infinitum, so nobody gets upset :-( ::::::

No. The problem is for decades that there was only one box. And now people have realised that maybe it's more interesting to hear a few more perspectives, they don't like it. The view that anything that isn't a middle aged white guy is suddenly "box ticking" is laughable and usually low key sexist and or racist.

No, it’s not.

The physicality and strength of League One/League Two players is obviously higher, as they’re men, but the skill levels are nowhere near the abilities of the players in the WSL.
Yeah mate, sure. If you’re not going to debate in good faith then we probably shouldn’t be replying to each other.

Ok well what do you think it is when someone instantly assumes a black person on TV is "box ticking"? You only have to look at the kind of arseholes who are siding with Barton to realise where a lot of this comes from. He's graduated within 48 hours to now claiming that white boys won't have any jobs to grow up to because they're being given to other people in "box ticking" exercises now. He knows he's clapped so he's now just resorting to the playbook favoured by statue defenders and Tommy Robinson fanboys.

As far as Barton goes I’m 100% with you mate, I also agree that white middle aged men should not be the norm in the media, where it falls down and becomes a box ticking exercise is employing people who have zero talent and/or knowledge about the game. There are way too many of those employed at the moment …!

There’s also the problem of there being so much football on TV that there won’t be much new to say in most games.

People get bored of people saying the same things or if they don’t sound energised enough.

Also peoples’ tolerance to hearing negative things about their own football club is almost at 0% now.

It’s not a gender thing, it’s recruiting the wrong pundits thing. Look at toe muncher Scholes. Top bracket player that sounds more depressed than Kevin the teenager.
Oh FFS @Alan Harper's Tash I'd forgotten the Ginger Pig when compiling my list..........

Nedum Onuoha is a contemporary of Barton and is one of the best pundits on football. His relatively low profile playing career (compared to the likes of Neville, Ferdinand etc.) are probably what holds him back from greater exposure (and cynically a refusal to pander to the red teams). Izzy Christiansen has also impressed my with her insight. I might be biased as they are both ex-blues but they have the skills to compete and better most of the mainstream pundits. I would hope that most people would not still see colour as relevant in 2023. Gender has further to go and the way to improve that is to select the best female pundits rather than those with the highest media profile.
Oh, and Barton is a complete moron.

If I want to listen to punditry, which I generally avoid, I want to hear it from accomplished ex players who I know and respect for their input.
Currently watching the Palace Dipper game and there's a woman on co comms, might as well be Debbie from next door, I don't respect her input.
How many ex pros are out there thinking I would have liked a career in TV but were denied because they didn't tick a box.
How many ex-pro's out there thinking I would have liked a career in TV but I never played for United, Liverpool or Arsenal?

I have absolutely no issues with anyone on punditry duty as long as they are competent.

You do not have to have played at the highest level to either enlighten an audience with your observations or opinions.

Liam Rosenior is a great example of this. Really articulate and insightful yet didn't have the greatest of playing careers...........
