Crucial save: MP John Leech says council should sell Eastlands to Manchester City

Town hall chiefs should sell off Manchester City’s ground to reduce the need for cuts, an MP has claimed.
John Leech – a lifelong Blues fan and Lib Dem MP for Withington – said the council could raise huge sums by inviting a bid from City owner Sheikh Mansour. Mr Leech said selling the City of Manchester Stadium would provide a way of covering the cost of cuts ‘over the next few years’.
He said: "I think it would make significantly more than the council receive in rent from City."
The stadium, built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, is currently leased to the club in a deal worth £3m a year to the council.
Experts believe the council could sell the ground for as much as £200m.
The council's Labour leadership rejected Mr Leech's suggestion last night as a ‘quick not-quite fix’. Finance spokesman Bernard Priest said yearly income from the ground was more valuable than a one-off lump sum.
Kevin Parker, MCFC Supporters Club general secretary, said: "If the club owned the stadium we would have more control over how it was run. If that money could be used by the council to protect jobs then it’s a win-win situation.

What's the interest on £200mill a year? Got to be more than £3mill.

I think is more to do with the plans that are currently being drawn up. There's no way the Council want out of that.

The council may be getting more money in the long term but this is in short sums yearly.

The one off lump sum would benefit the council right now in it's time of need

It's not City's duty to bail out either the council or the government, and the last I heard we had little interest in buying the ground anyway. If City were desperate to buy but kept getting rebuffed by the council then this suggestion would make perfect sense, but that isn't the situation as far as I'm aware.

The only reason for buying it would be so that we can knock it down.

Cutting the ties within the community to the stadium would be a disaster for MCC as well.

it cost about 70m to build didn't it ? then we paid a further £20m to adapt it. £200m ? they can fuck right off

i'd rather fuck it off and build a new one on the analine site

and how much of that 70m was from lottery grants ?

edit * it cost £110 million to build and sport england donated £77m of it so council put in £33m then we put £30m ( plus whatever costs since)

OG by MCC in my opinion.

The clubs rep worldweide will get higher and higher as will income. By keeping the stadium they can show a productive melding of private/state working together and bask in the reflected glory of future sucess which in turn will increase tourism to the area and their share of cash from being part of the project.

If only things cost x to build and were therefore worth x. *cough* Millenium Dome.

Anyway there's a small matter of a 250 year lease the council have to uphold, as long as we continue to abide by the terms of it. I think as long as we have that lease, we have a good business relationship with MCC.

3m a year lease + ticket sales (over 32k) and concert ticket profits surely?

You could then understand that the cost of the stadium to the council is probably closer to the 200m rather than just the cost of the stadium to build.

I'd like us to buy it as it would mean more money on a match day and allow us to make our mark on the stadium.

I thought we'd bought out the ticket sales>32k clause. I'm sure I saw it on here somewhere and even responded to the thread.

It's actually £3m a year lease + nothing. £200m is an absolute crazy pricing, seeing as we don't have to buy, we have a 250 year lease!

What mark on the stadium do you have in mind? I don't think anyone could mistake it for Belle Vue Aces.

even at the interest rates us mere plebs can get that would amount to approximately £5 million a year, less tax.
it's a no-brainer.

I'd like it to be blue on the outside to be honest. Manchester is grey enough! I'm guessing that we aren't allowed to change that as it will fall under the same catagory as the 'MCFC' on the seats etc?

If the ticket cost has been wiped out then, yeah, it may not be worthwhile.

Yeah that would look pretty cool... the painting job would probably be perpetual tho eh, like the Forth Bridge. I imagine the owners want something more gladiatorial.

Totally agree! The problem with Leech is that he knows the cuts put om M/C council are totally fucking unfair and instead of having the balls to say so, he sees our owners as a cash cow for wank ConDem policy.
