"The mistakes that have been highlighted recently seem to have knocked him back a little bit," Allardyce said. "You have to make fewer mistakes at international level than at Premier League level and that is the difference between success and failure.

"If you are successful, everyone gives the ball away or makes a mistake, but if the mistake costs a goal, then it’s a problem. There is an element as he gets more experienced, learning when it is too dangerous to hold on to the ball, to when it’s right to hold on to the ball and come up and play. It is not just come out and play every time. I am sure Pep will be the same as me, you can take a risk but it has to be minimal because if you lose the ball and the opposition score, it can be a problem.

"England lost their opportunity to go farther in the European Championship because of our mistakes, not the opposition’s brilliant football."

Why is this fat **** talking about Stones making mistakes, when he hasn't made any ?

Beat me to it. John 'gets it'. He'll be the next captain barring the unfortunate.

I've really disagreed with that captain thing so far, but the lads on the bluemoon podcast pointed out something very valid. Stones has put himself forward for post match camera duties on 3 of the 4 games so far. He's obviously riding the crest of wave and the system is developing his confidence and not just his performance, so he may well be the face of our team going forward.

I don't blame you at all for disagreeing with it. It sounds like a goofy and speculative claim to make. I didn't even factor that into it but that's another good point with the media appearances. I had no idea John was this mature. When he speaks to the media he's calm, clear, comes off as genuine, and adds insight that shows intelligence. I don't know how to phrase this ... but have you seen him point out and direct people with the run he wants them to make or the pass that the person he passed to needs to make? Leadership and confidence. It could be a while before Vinny passes the torch anyway and Joe won't be here to take it.

Cheers - similar attitude to myself. Can understand us hating the reds of both cities but not each other, think Lescott saga soured things on our part- but we got a good deal and he won things so can't blame him. As said before don't begrudge you lot any success tbh if it makes United fans pipe down then it can only be good for football!! Back to Stones he was a joy to watch, stayed professional after the Chelsea interest and will be an outstanding signing. Personally think he would also be excellent in defensive midfield but if he defends stronger than he did last year ( thinking of the semi at you place last season!) then he is a quality CB.

Fucking hell, we're getting some good toffees signing up these days :)

Rag.

The only thing I took from that drivel is that Allardyce didn't watch the Euros.

Typical archaic English football attitude of "we didn't win this tournament... must have been because of defensive mistakes." The reason is that the most average England squad I've ever seen simply had no offensive gameplan. We created next to fuck all throughout the tournament. The movement was dire and we had absolutely no idea of how to break down stubborn defences.

Thankfully we've got just the right man to bring fresh ideas to remain one step ahead of the opposition and play positive football instead of someone who will immediately blame mistakes and bad luck for predictably underwhelming performances... oh ffs.
