John Stones - 2016/17 performances

Well if he knew how big a miss kompany was going to be then buying Stones last summer was never going to suffice. For all his potential, nobody could have watched him at Everton and come to the conclusion he was going to fill the void. I suppose Laporte put a spanner in the works by pulling out of his move but there was still plenty of time left to buy someone who could actually defend competently. But at least what you're saying suggests they will be going for a top cb this summer which is essential imo but I haven't been totally convinced it's something we intended to do.

I've just been discussing defenderss in the transfer forum & thinking about it now, it might actually be a good thing Pep didn't sign all his cbs last season. Now he knows what he needs rather than guessing.

This is a great point. Pep has given the entire squad a season to assess directly what we need so it was best for us all to ignore all the media bollocks about it being a failure. I personally think it was the best way of him tackling the re-build. We all knew the team was too old and a bit stale. I love the way we have started this window, no delays in announcements of those gone and I expect this to continue for the next few weeks. Pep not taking a holiday shows how important this off season is.

Stones is a strange one for me - having a great game and then... out of the blue... makes a huge blunder, essentially passing the ball to an opponent which immediately leads to a goal scoring chance/goal scored.

Everton wouldn't put him among their starters on a regular basis. So why should we - unless he proves himself (which he hasn't)?

I think that we should get rid of Stones and get a hugely talented English replacement to make up the English quota.

you clearly haven't watched everton then. he would definitly get into the everton side.

Just read what Adams has said, & it's a really shitty thing to say.

He's 100% right in what he says imo, but he's a right **** for saying it in the open, about a young England defender. Stones has a lot of potential for improvement in the future & having ex England defenders picking on him like that is totally out of order & just fuels all the bastards in the media to get on his case.

Drunken old twat.

Would be more concerned if the imbecile started raving about how good Stones was.

He makes Merson seem intelligent.

Hate that shit, so typical England. A defender is good at passing? Can't play him in defence then he'll be a liability, stick him in midfield instead where he instead of being an above average passer for his position he will instead be below average, genius. Every other country does it the other way around, they are constantly trying to get more technically gifted players further back in the team, but we know better of course as history shows.

I'd actually be interested to see him play there as an experiment. I remember one England game he played where he was bringing the ball forward and was better than all the other midfielders and he has changed a few City games when he started to come forward with the ball. It would be worth a look.

That's because he's good on the ball for a centerback, not good on the ball in general. It's easy to break through the lines from CB because no one is picking you up, Harry Maguire does it all the time and he's an absolute donkey. Even at RB he stood out like a sore thumb for his lack of actual technical ability and mobility because the required level to play there is so much higher than at CB and midfield is even higher due to the pressure coming from all directions.

Stones is a £50m ball playing centerback, sticking him in midfield to play the Phil Jones role is just a massive waste of talent, just like when we tried to do it with Ledley King and just like when we tried to do it with Wio.

It's actually a very valid tactical ploy, called the Pulis method. You shoe-horn as many central defenders into the team as possible and try and score from corners. Visionary.
