Personally i would prefer to go into the season with otty komps mangala and denayer to see what pep can make of them.
Spend the money on two new fullbacks.
I really would (like you say) bring Denayer back and see how he does. If we want holistic then this is where we start ! He looks decent and we've spent so much on defenders lately with not much to show for it then we should be looking at a new approach. Give mangala and otamendi a season under pep and see if it was the player or the tactics and blood deneyer into the team.

To be fair, IMO having watched plenty of Stones, and the fact he is used to the Prem, I'd prefer him all day long over Laporte who may have just turned out to be another Nastasic/Mangala.

I think Laporte is cut from a different cloth than those two with respect to his footballing talent, but I fully agree about Stones. Absolute no-brainer that he should always have been the priority of the two. Be interesting to see how this plays out now because IMO Stones/Everton will want absolute top dollar. That's the reality if you go hard after a player like we did and get snubbed in the way we did.

Personally I think it will end up being close to 50 million pounds (with add ons) - but fuck I hope we get it done.

It's more likely the deal was on after the player had made the right noises making our execs confident enough to get City TV to prepare some kind of welcome (as alluded to by Ric yesterday) and at the 24th hour the player had a change of heart for whatever reason. It's not unheard of and its something you have to factor in when you're dealing with people, not objects.

I get that. But a deal is only done when it's done i.e. contracts signed. So, when someone posts deal done before that, then it's not right, because as you say, anything can happen to scupper a deal at the last moment. Anyway, ignore me...I'm just being a pedant.

Nah, you ignore me, I thought I was on the Laporte thread! Haha!

The worse possible thing for me, would be missing on Laporte and then Stones picking the rags. Not only would we be missing on 2 of our biggest ,long term targets but also mean that we'd likely have to go into a new season, with everyone knowing we tried to replace Mangala but we couldnt....personally feel, this deal is even more important now that Laporte is off the table and just hope we dont try and get clever with our bids. Starting point is going be 40mil after this is what was rejected last summer and I think its going to take a Sterling type offer to get this done....

Stones & Smalling, together again.

Like chewing gum & nuts.

It would be a kick in the balls if he goes to the rags and we end up missing out on our 2 top CB targets. Hopefully we can actually get this one over the line.

Hopefully the lure of Champions League football and working with Guardiola will give us the edge over United, should he choose to leave Everton. I imagine he'll have talks with Koeman first though.

I'd be quite happy to miss out on this lad, I just don't get the hype about him. I don't think he's an improvement on what we have anyway.

In fact, is there any hype about him ? Looks ordinary. Why don't we just buy an English defender from evertons youth academy now and save ourselves paying £50m in 2019 ?? Seems like we're buying for the sake of it rather than paying for talent because I'm yet to be convinced he has any
He has plenty of talent but is he worth 50 million ? That remains to be seen. With the Laporte deal dead I imagine if Pep is convinced about this guy we will be in for him. Really hope it is all sorted either way in July rather than dragging on until deadline day

I would agree with you BUT I have grave doubts concerning VK and his ability to get and stay fit. If he were to have another season like the one just passed it is essential that we have at least one more top class CB. If we could rely on Vinny things would be different.
