John Stones

Not against Sunderland, which is what I thought I was responding to. After that, if we are playing 4 at the back, I think it will be Vinnie (if fit) and Ota taking the lions share of games

It's fairly obvious that Pep doesn't think Kompany can be relied on at all, I think he'll want Otamendi-Stones to be the default partnership by the end of the season. Kompany being fit will be a bonus when it happens.

Stones' passing ability and on the ball stuff is what we are buying him for - and that's an important part of Guardiolas plans, so all being well I'd expect him to be first choice CB by virtue of having those abilities that Pep needs from at least one CB in the team.

Boatengs passing out from the back, bypassing the midfield and getting the ball to the wingers early was such a big part of Bayerns game, I think if Stones comes then he'll become very important to the teams style of play very quickly.

Sunderland quick?

Clichy didn't go to the Euro's so he was back on Pep's first day.

Mangala and Sagna are still on holiday because of their Euro 16 commitments.

I could be wrong but I don't remember Mangala getting so much as one minute on the pitch at the Euros. He can't exactly be "tired". I think all the signs are that he simply doesn't figure in Pep's plans. Which is why he's very determined to get Stones. Because if you can't rely on Vinny (and apparently, sadly, you can't) for fitness, that leaves us with Otamendi and, basically, the kids. Not a very good way to go into qualifying games for the CL, to say the least.

The signs don't point to that at all. He's simply on holiday because he was in training all through to the final euro 16. And now he's getting a holiday.

KDB is also not in training yet, is he not in Pep's plans because he's on holiday? No.

So how many high profile cock ups do you think we'd allow from a 50m player? Last season we thought Otamendi was the answer at 30m, the season before we thought the same of Mangala at almost 40m.

Otamendi's story isn't written. I think most would agree Pep had a hand in his signing and he's looking like a fit in our new system. Let's not jump the gun on our own players quite yet. Same with Sterling.

Otamendi looked promising in the Kamikaze covering role v Dortmund & rescued Tosin & Willy a few times with excellent blocks, but there was one worrying moment where he was faced with a quick player & he was nowhere near it. How he & the team adapt to that may decide his future.

I'm not sure why the story of Otamendi being a "flop" has started to become a widespread opinion. He was brilliant at times last season, and when he wasn't great, you could nearly always put it down to Pellegrini's mad defensive set up forcing him to jump out of the line.

Under Pep, and with a season to get used to England and the team, I expect he'll make a few people writing him off look pretty silly.
