John Stones

Just had a debate on Twitter, points I feel would be enjoyed on here.

Stones, a great prospect. But a player who would cost a fortune upwards of 40million and on the back of a bad season. Many blame media and hype, but I would argue that the media and hype would be coupled with expectation once he comes here. His levels have dropped hugely, what will they be like when the media inevitably want to see him fail and criticise his every move and decision?

In my view Stones is an expensive project signing. He lacks positional discipline, lacks reading of the game and lacks leadership. All three attributes which are vital. Say we sell Mangala and replace with Stones, Kompany gets injured, who is the leader between Otamendi, Denayer and Stones? Not one of them is. We need a cool head that a deputy in the form of MDM was but he is shot and on his way out. Stones is all wrong for what we need. I hear he needs coaching, well imo Mangala does and we already have him, he has many great attributes but lacks a final pass and reading of a game which can be coached and he wont cost us a fresh 40m investment.

Stones is a punt, he comes with no form, comes with no top level experience and has been playing for an average team. 40m+, absolutely fucking crazy. Go and get Bonucci, Txiki. One of the best CBs in last 10 years, plays the way we want, is a leader, has 5 years here maybe and can easily cover for VK injuries and would marshall a defence superbly. When VK and Bonucci are a team, it is undeniably the strongest defensive partnership in the game, full stop. Nothing comes close, nothing.

We would better off signing Ryan shawcross from Stoke than stones and that is a serious suggestion. Our defence needs grit and organisation which is not there when vinny is injured. Hence we don't communicate at the back when defending a high line or set pieces and equally when we have a corner ourselves we don't have a snarling centre half causing problems in their box.

Look at Huth at Leicester, we need one player to come in when vinny is not there with some experience and the balls to tell kolorov to remember he is a defender and to sort out the defensive line. We have enough skilful ball playing defenders and we need a bit more organisation from a bit of a gobby sod. Someone strong enough to bollock ya ya now and then for not tracking back this season would not have gone a miss this season.

Pep will till Kolorov he is a defender and a shit one at that then he'll be out.

From what I've seen of Stones I like. He looks confident with the ball at his feet and has an eagerness to move forward with the ball. He has good control of the ball at his feet and is always looking to turn defence into attack. He is young and hungry and has talent Imo. Let's not forget he has been playing out of position of late filling in at full back. Everton fans I've spoken to are baffled by it but do question his attitude and application. I feel he feels a little lost in regards to adapting to the different positions. I think he should be played to his strengths and I think that's centre back. I also feel young players are written off far to quickly. It only takes a good confidence boost sometimes to turn an otherwise average player (see Mangala) into one where you actually think there is a player in there.

Ryan Shawcross I haven't seen enough really but I question who I think Pep could influence and teach and mould the best. I think that Stones would do really well. I could be wrong but I'd happily welcome him here.

40 million? Well young, English from a rival club? With new investment? How much was lescott? 40 million I'd be asking if I was Everton.

Yes and 40 million is why we should firmly not even give it a thought.

Have I stumbled upon a City board meeting?
Who gives a fuck about the price,IF we have got it and the management think it's the right move, then so be it.

For Christ sake. It's actually going to happen, isn't it?

I don't want us to spend £40-50 million on a player that just hasn't done well this season. You can say all you want about Martinez, but some of the errors has been out of his hands. Stones has been responsible for some of them.

Best young centre back around at the moment. Pep will coach his errors out of him.
Definately one for the future. Everton have been shite this season and all been laid at a young lads door.
No wonder he wants fucking out.

Based on what is he the best young CB around at the moment? As on this seasons form he's not even the best young CB at Everton. I really don't know where his reputation has come from.

The days of a Martin keown defender are over. Think he would be a good asset.

Excellent insight and couldn't agree more with your assessment of stones and the risks/cost. Unfortunately I can't see Juve ever letting Bonucci go or us splashing a massive fee at another CB around 30 years old.

I recommend to anyone who has not read it...Pep Confidential. The story of his first year at Bayern and probably the best indicator of what we should expect next season. Most of the posts on this thread (Shawcross?????) seem absurd in light of what actually is going to happen in July.

Well I suppose it is summer and like the Eu it's time to give more money to merseyside to help them rebuild. It will be a starting bid of 20 his true worth and we end up 40 plus delph and Denayor for this unproven player with a dip in form under the hope that pep can make him better. Denayor will be awesome and Delph will be like Milner

We then sell a vastly improved mangala to a champions league rival who becomes a rock ( eg Slavic and boating ).

He then has a poor first season but he is young and the price tag and accusations of greed are weighing on the lads shoulders so we must give him time , press say city have ruined him like rodwell and others with all their money until we sell him to Sunderland.

2017 we make a 50m bid for next Liverpool hopeful.....

In a big world there has to be better players to recruit than just 30 miles away...do our scouts only like travelling short distances
