John Stones

We might be able to shift bony onto Everton. Can't see lukaku staying so maybe bony plus 15 million?
Yes please . You must be in business .

Sometimes we give our cards away in these transfer dealings and when it's dealing with the merseyside clubs we definitely always get the worse deal.

So a 40m+ player who has looked even worse at RB than CB for Everton. Or, we try and get Carvajal from Real who is the REAL deal (see what I did there?).

I agree with you. Just trying to understand why we are interested in John Stones as I don't rate him as a centre half.
Mangala and Otamendi are better players.

Let's see how they do in Europe before you pmsl. You think Pep wants defenders who can't pass?

I hope he wants defenders who can defend. A defender who can't defend properly is not going to do us any good in the League or in Europe....

I am not trying to row with you mate. I have just read his book and he wants to play from the back. A bit like Swansea did when they were at there best a couple of years back. Someone posted Ryan shawcross in here a few pages back and in the context of what I have just read it just seemed absurd. I could comfortably live with stones alongside kompany.

Then play Nasri and Silva back there.

World class defenders can defend and pass and we absolutely should be looking for them. We currently have two centre halves (Mangala and Otta) who are OK defensively, one is OK with the ball at his feet. I don't see the point in changing one who can't pass for one who can't defend.

I think stones is not as bad a defender as you make out. Time will tell. All the signs are he wants out and we want him.

No, not at all... All about opinions. And I agree with how he wants to play and having players comfortable on the ball. But not if said player is a liability defensively... And for 40/50 mil, all it is, is a massive gamble. I did reply originally to you saying the days of a Keown type defender have gone. Which I just don't agree with. The trend is for people to be good on the ball and I get that. But they have to be able to defend properly as well. And the likes of Huth and Morgan have shown there's a place for those type of players still in the game today. Leicester winning the league surely shows this! So what if they hoof it more than most. They know how to defend, and surely that is the most important aspect.

Just watched Evertons last 10 games (goals conceded) 2 clean sheets, one where Stones played 2 mins. He comes on for a few mins against Villa and they concede. Personally Poor for 13 goals in last 10 games. The volume is just far too much. And this isn't Martinez's tactics for me. Loses his man repeatedly in the box, poor positionally, gets out jumped a lot, questionable decision making, plays suicidal balls. I just feel lots of people have been blinded by him looking good on the ball, which he is to be fair. Probably one of the best around. But defensively he's just not good enough. Especially for the daft money it's going to take. Evertons defensive record is miles better without him... Says it all to me

He isn't as bad as some make out and his decision making and positioning may need a bit of work. The thing is though a lot of his mistakes come from trying to play out and having no options leading to losing the ball.
What people need to realise is playing out from the back, and this goes for Hart as well, needs the whole team to be drilled in the tactic so the rest of the team are firstly ready to receive the ball and know what they are going to do with before they get it. Pep will drill this into them over and over and that's when the errors will get eradicated.

Go and watch Evertons last 10 games (goals conceded). I posted above he was poor for 13 goals during this run. Out of those 13 I'd say 2 were the result of overplaying. The awful back pass at Watford away and the pass out against Liverpool for Sturridge to score.. The rest are being poor defensively.

It was me. My point is anyone alongside kompany is fine because he is a leader and organiser. It's when he is injured we go to shit. We need a different gobby strong leader type like huth, John terry , yes even shawcross. Another good footballer is not what we need when Kompany is injured another leader is what we need.

Look we don't need to sign anyone if vinny can stay fit for the entire season but in recent years that has not happened so we need to think about a deputy for kompany not mangala or Oti. Hence why I don't think stones is right. He is certainly not right when it is 40 mill plus.

Sorry, but sticking one of the players you mentioned in a team trying to play possession football would be an absolute disaster. They can only play on the edge of their box, we need our defenders to be capable of playing high up the field. Being a "leader" isn't worth much if you cripple the team with you inability to play the way the rest of the team does
