John Stones

There's no guarantee he'll go anywhere - not if Koeman wants to keep him, and Stones is happy to see how things develop under Koeman. If they are going to spend £100m then that might change the way a lot of people think about EFC including the player? Possible surely

I don't see City buying two central defenders on top of what we already have. Especially given that Kompany should have a decent chance of recovery. last season he never gave himself a chance to recover. he just wanted to get back. Now he's forced to take a rest and get himself right.

everyone knows that. if City add Laporte on top of Kompany, forget about any top player player coming here - unless there's going to be a radical change in the playing system.

I agree with you mate, but I don't think there is enough passing ability at the back, unless denayer steps up to the plate, and I include company in there

I really rate Stones as well. Lots of mistakes in him, but his talent is unquestionable. I would go for him above all the other defenders we've been linked with, but then I don't know about Laporte. It does sound like the Laporte deal is well advanced

No, Laporte is with Mendes, he's the front man, Puyol is a player liaison.

And Stones only changed agents recently from Star Management to WMG.

Would seem very strange to be changing so soon and especially with this summer.

In addition, City have briefed off record on a number of the players we have been linked to.

Laporte and Stones have not been denied.

If City had any inkling Stones was now going to United, we'd have briefed we were not in for him anymore, to avoid any embarrassment I would assume.

Is that what we did with Pogba?

We have to have four centre backs in the squad; especially given Vinnie's injury problems. A lot depends on whether Denayer is in the squad and whether that is primarily as a CB or RB.

Can't say I'm a fan of rotating centre backs but if the system is well understood and you have a stable core of defenders, you ought to be able to make it work over time. You buy both Stones and Laporte with a long-term view. Whether we will buy one, both or none is something we will have to wait on but I do not think it is at all inconceivable that we would buy both.
Agreed. Hope we buy both. Think they are both very good players who could develop into a great tandem. Especially playing in a Pep possession football system. Also, if Kompany's injury stays a problem, we'll be chopping and changing CBs anyway. So we might as well have very good ones.

Mendez isn't behind puyols agency, was set up with Ivan de la Pena in 2015....

Unless he's behind the scenes but there are no links to suggest this!!

Signed with Gesfute and Mendes back in Feb 2016, numerous reports.

Nobody can do a deal across Spain or Portugal without Mendes somehow being involved.

Not sure what Puyol had agreed to.

Mendes also has Renato Sanches but he couldn't even persuade an 18-year-old kid to join United over Bayern, even with having Maureen as a client.

I'll bow to your superior knowledge, just a strange one having so many parties involved, especially as Mendez is a **** who hates paying commissions to anyone but himself....

Mendes is the man clubs/players bring in to seal the deal, so he gets paid, regardless of who might be the personal rep.

Otamendi brought Mendes in last summer to push a deal over the line but he still has another agent.

Mendes is simply the afterbirth of Pini Zahavi and Kia Joorabachian.

All in it together.

He's not exactly covered himself in much glory, has he?

Outside of getting his hooks into Ronaldo, De Gea and Mourinho, he's been responsible for Otamendi, Mangala, Rojo, Di Maria, Valdes and Bebe coming over here.

WMG Management are agents for Michael Owen and Anton Ferdinand (Rio's brother). Owen and Rio Ferdinand have both been talking up Stones recently. Owen saying he was good enough for Barca.

Didn't say you did. I am pointing out that posters (not you specifically) say this defender is shit and this one is class blah blah. When all of it is complete bullshit. John Stones is both shit and world class. It depends on what you ask him to do.

Also you said that it would be better to pair a ball playing defender with a "brute" which is evidence you know nothing about how Pep plays. That would be an utter disaster for a Pep team.

Haha. I certain,y seem to remember Pep playing with Pique and Mascherano at the back several times for Barcelona, Benatia/Martinez partnering Boateng too. It's not outlandish in a Guardiola team at all. And by "brute" I don't mean some lump like Mangala who has zero technical capabilities, I'm thinking more Otamendi/Kompany who aren't bad on the ball and give us a bigger physical presence at the back.
