John Stones

It's pretty clear Stones is coming to us, the question is how soon before the deadline and for how much. No point Everton keeping him in preseason training, pretending he's going to be part of the first team. That will just mess up their preparation. At the same time, we need him quickly or it messes up our preseason. It's therefore a case of who cracks first and accepts an offer or pays what the other one wants.

Bony is an interesting part of that. Everton want a £50m deal. We probably only need£15m on Bony to make an accounting break even, but that makes Stones more expensive over his contract. As Everton will make a profit, it's less of an issue for them, but with lower incomes, they need to be careful how much Bony appears on their books as for FFP purposes, especially if they make it into Europe.

I suspect the final deal will be unknown and very complicated, where we probably compensate Bony for being sold, allowing his wages to be less at Everton with that money coming off the value of Stones, helping us and also meaning Everton have to pay less to Barnsley.

lol fella, you think too hard.

That's why swap deals rarely happen. We will buy Stones independent of Wilf potentially going to them.

So we give them £50m cash for Stones. A week later they ring up and ask how much for Bony, who we don't need to sell. Do you think they'd get a good deal?

IF they get Bony, it'll be part of the same deal or they don't get him at all. Swap deals are more complicated due to the number of people who need to agree to it, so if Everton want him it's down to Bony. He's not going to get a better offer in the Premier League, but he might fancy a move abroad (he still drives a left hand drive motor, despite how long in Britain?)

Well we'll have to agree to differ - I think the reason Koeman met Txiki was to ask what price we would want for Wilf, why else would Koeman be involved?

I'll bet that IF Wilf ends up there, it won't be done as a part-ex or swap.

An ok player with potential who put in some truly awful displays last season. Don't think he improves us significantly short term but maybe in 2/3 years that will change. Martinez was terrible for him, let's hope Guardiola works his magic.

The Bony criticism is overboard- don't blame Koeman if he wants him. A unique player who could score 20 a season and even managed 14 goals as second choice in his only full season at City, plus a very nice guy who won't cause difficulties in the dressing room. I'd like to see Bony stay and fight for his place, but if him leaving is what it takes to get Stones, I'd be OK with seeing him go and would wish him well at Everton.

And I stand by what I said about Stones not being an immediate starter, provided Kompany stays fit for the first few months at least. Give him some time to regain confidence after a slightly disappointing season and a no-showat the Euros, give him a few bench appearances and cup games so that when VK or Otamendi get injured (and they will) Stones is ready to step in. I think that Stones, if he comes, has the potential to be as important to us in five year as Kompany is now, but he needs time with Pep first.

Also, does anyone buy into reports that we're getting two new CBs? Genuinley curious because I don't see it happening this season unless one is very young, or Mangala goes. And where would that leave Denayer?

It's true that he did have extremely bad games last season. Probably think of Mangala vs Liverpool and say Stones had four or five of those. But you're right that Guardiola could get him back to the player he was in the 2014/15 season and then we'd be laughing.

The only reason Stones would want to stay at Everton is to work with Koeman, who was one of the best CB's in the history of football and knows the position. But if Pep can get Stones to anywhere near the level of Koeman in his prime, £50 million will look like a total bargain.

I've been away from a while, but look! The Euros have ended and now things are starting to happen with Stones and City. It's almost as if a certain Everton fan told you this would happen, yet some of you (not all) preferred to stick their fingers in their ears.
