But you can say the same about a lot of players, just because there isn't 5-6 teams fighting for him doesn't mean he's not worth it. Mourinho wanted him last year and Guardiola this year, two of the top managers in the world so they obviously both rate him highly. Also Chelsea did end up bidding £40mill last year but it was too late in the window. That £40mill base + this years increase in TV money is the reason we want £50mill.
Keep him, enjoy.

With three years left can't he pay off the rest of his wages to buy out his contract? He is only on 30k a week it would be chump change.

You seem to be getting irritated abut i'm unsure why. I'm just trying to put an Everton view across on this, we are in the exact same situation with Napoli. We have bid around £35mill, for a player who cost them £5.5 mill 2 years ago and didn't have a great first season. He has 3 years left and has told Napoli he wont sign a new deal so its a very similar situation (even though Stones hasnt said he wont sign a new deal). Napoli don't seem to have reduced the price because of his comments as that's their valuation but I doubt they would quote the same price to another Italian/German etc team. Do I believe he is worth £40+ mill? Not at all but if we want him then we have to pay Napoli what they want.

Why does he rarely play in your starting 11?

Or you can wait, play smart and wait for other targets to emerge. If the club will not accept the money the club believes he is worth then move on, go for a short term replacement if necessary. Wait for the right moments. If clubs continue to pay and give up to silly demands then this mess will only get worse. Don't get me wrong some players are worth big money, these players are special players. Stones isn't in this bracket, he's just a kid who's had one decent season and somebody who for a 'defender' doesn't defend very well. If all City want is a centre back that can pass a ball out the back but can't really defend all that well then they should just convert and save themselves 50 million.
