As for what I'd do differently, I'm not sure. But if we're just going to pay what they want anyway, and the haggling has failed, surely he can anticipate that (because this happens every time) and just pay the fee without the fuss.

I can't imagine much would change. We're quoted a premium rate anyway because we're City and people's perception of us.
Besides, I don't care how much we spend on transfers. I like football not accountancy. It's not my money. I'm of the opinion that as long as we get the best in the world we should pay whatever it takes!

But it's also a high risk/low reward strategy in my opinion. In poker terms it's high variance with bad pot odds. i.e. it's not worth the bluff.
We're more likely to miss out on deals (Sanchez for example - I know, thank god we did, but still) than we are to get a bargain.

I don't think it is reasonable to moan about us haggling as you call it. If we just paid whatever was asked for immediately I am sure we would be asked even more unreasonable prices the next time. The only way to not be fu**ed over is to negotiate hard about the price, and even to walk away every now and then. Negotiating prices is hard when the other party has something you want. No because my problem isn't with the scouting system Txiki clearly employs (he's excellent at finding the right player, rather than a name player like Ed Wood). My problem is with his high risk/no reward negotiating strategy. That's all.

If it's got 19 watchers I do. I actually did do this very recently with a Hofner verythin CT 30 guitar. I wanted it, it was in high demand, so I just paid the (very reasonable) asking price. No bother.

As long as it doesn 't put the deal at risk he can offer what he wants. To me, though, it seems that by low-balling the negations, he tends to put deals at risk of collapse, which in my opinion, isn't worth it. Like I said, in poker terms it's high variance with bad pot odds. Not worth the bluff.
So I don't care what we offer. Just so long as we get the player. So why not just pay what they're asking?
