Jorginho

Whilst I’ve only seen him play in the games against us and on YouTube, I’m guessing he’s a player you don’t truly appreciate until he’s lining up for the team you support.

Perhaps someone a bit like Montolivo and Carrick...?

Jorginho is unquestionably a player who contributed to Napoli’s mighty attempt to win the Serie A title this last season. His all round game and his ability to link up seamlessly with Insigne, Mertens and Callejon was never in doubt. I watched around 20 of Napoli’s matches last season and his performances were invariably excellent.

He is exactly the type of midfield presence that Guardiola admires and if reports from the Italian media are accurate this morning then it can only be a matter of a day or two before he is over for his medical.

So I guess we're going into next season with a 33 year old Fernandinho as our only holding midfielder with defensive qualities...

Don't watch Italian football but he looked good from what I saw of him in Europe. I think if we sign him he will be compared directly with that Fred chap gone to the rags. Next season will be all about who got the best deal. Time will tell.

Jorginho isn't a slouch defensively, he's just a different player from Fernandinho. He's an out and out defensive midfielder for both a fantastic Napoli and Italian national team. He wouldn't be playing the role he has if he didn't have defensive qualities to his game.

He's a deep-lying playmaker (a regista), not a defensive midfielder.

I wouldn’t call the Italian nation team ‘fantastic’, however he himself is a fantastic player!

Call him what you want, he's still been deployed in the same DM role as Fernandinho is for us, with two CM's ahead of him in Allan and Hamsik, like KDB/Silva for us.

He plays in a very similar role, but as I mentioned, they are just different players with different qualities. He's like a blend of Fernandinho and Gundogan - he has a balance of quality on the ball and defensive skills.

This whole defensive midfielder thing is a myth with Pep. He likes his players to work together to win the ball. To pass the ball accurately and smartly. De Bruyne wins a higher % of tackles than De Jong. This isn't Pep teaching tackles (as he famously put it), it's the method of winning the ball back in important positions..

Jorginho isn't here to be a De Jong, he's here to sit deeper and control the play short or long. When the ball is won by him, a defender, an attacking midfielder, he's there to build the play in the way the gaffer wants.

Homar, is right. The role jorghino will take up is akin to Regista. This role has different responsibilities to that of defensive midfielder.

I think this may be what Pep is looking for. Therefore although it's legitimate to have concerns about how we may shape up defensively, I think it may be time to drop comparisons between jorghino and ferdy. Two different players.

Except, a lot of the time, Pep has required Fernandinho to be a 'holding' midfielder, not this.

Which is pretty much a defensive midfielder a lot of the time.

He has had him challenging for headers with people like Harry Kane whilst the cbs drop off, and also dropping into the penalty area to win headers & also dropping between the central defenders winning challenges. If he didn't want that, Fern would be doing something else.

So the idea Pep doesn't play with a defensive midfielder is actually, not really true.

He just won the Premier League with imo the world's best one playing there & in Pep's opinion, one of the 3 best.

“I think Fernandinho, right now, is one of the three best holding midfielders in the world,” said the City manager.

He may decide to play with a 'quarterback'. Or he may change from one game to the next.

But Pep Guardiola has benn using a 'holding' midfielder. So fuck his books off & look at what he's done in he Premier League, & see what he does next, rather than basing everything on stuff he did years ago.

If we sign Jorginho, he has a whole bunch of options, & will try to pick the best ones for any given job, I imagine.

agreed, and whilst Fern can demonstrably keep doing Fern stuff, I think Pep would rather plug a weakness with a different type of player who gives us a different option than bring in cover/alternatives to Fern who would give us the same weaknesses. Once Fern declines then he can be replaced if Pep feels we still need that type of player.
