Joy Division / New Order thread

Bands used to do this in the 'old days' to encourage fans to buy the singles knowing that they wouldn't get them again on the album.
It may well also be down to timing with some of them...
Digital was released as part of 'A Factory Sample (FAC-2)' along with Glass about 7 months before the release of Unknown Pleasures.
Transmission was released 4 months after UP and 8 months before Closer.
Atmosphere/Dead Souls was also released in France (only!!!) bang in between the two albums and a good while before its UK release.
So it looks more like a case of 'we've released that - let's move on'

Slightly more Joy Division than New Order for me.

Went to see Peter Hook and the Light in the Shankly hotel last year in Liverpool. Crowd was only about 600 or so. Fantastic gig and only cost about £20 or so.
He did 26 songs. He did 16 Joy Division and 10 New Order. Think it was a warm up gig for their American tour that started a couple of days later.

Most of these were on the double album “Still” which factory released in 1981 to either complete the legacy or cash in on Ian’s death, depending on your perspective.

He should stick to the Joy Division stuff, he absolutely crucifies the New Order stuff.

Technique is a great album. I agree after that they went a bit downhill but still with plenty of moments of inspiration
I debated whether to include Technique but for me that was the start of the decline. I loved Vanishing Point, liked Fine Time and Round and Round but in retrospect, this was the album when they moved away from big, long, instrumental based tracks and towards 4 minutes verse/chorus tunes. Basically Barney was starting to become dominant.

After that I liked Regret but they mimed it on TOTP, which was another seachange in their attitude. After that I liked Crystal and 100MPH but that's more or less it. I carried on watching them live until about 2005(?) when I saw them in Blackpool, Barney was reading from an autocue and I decided I wasn't enjoying it any more.

But in the 80s, when their gigs were shambolic and often violent, they refused to mime and their covers didn't even contained the band's name but stood as works of art, for me they were the best band int he world.

Will always be my favourite band of all time

The way I look at it is, Joy Division influenced many bands of the early 80s, New Order influenced quite bit more than that with their involvement with the hacienda and the whole Madchester movement. I still prefer to listen to Joy Division personally though.

Interview with Peter Hook from May, talking about Joy Division and more:

I didn't know he was friends with Damon Albarn, even during the Oasis "battle", which I thought was silly at the time. Also didn't know he'd done a collab with Gorillaz earlier this year, but I'd have recognised those baselines.

Gorillaz aren't usually my bag but this isn't a bad album, plenty of collabs with Elton John, guy from the Cure and a few others.
