Jules Koundé

Good as he is I still repeat, he won't solve our current issues. A presence/leader in the backline like Koulibaly who's easily a much better, established defender should be our priority. He is someone we should have brought in when Kompany was still here so he would've learned the traits and developed before being a starter. It's much easy to start regularly for Sevilla and play week in week out.

One of the better videos I’ve seen of Jules.
A few things that stand out:

– He has great defensive awareness and seem present pretty much constantly, quite the opposite of Stones and Otamendi. He sees the threat early so has very good positioning to intercept the ball or tackle the opponent.

– He prefers to stay on his feet rather than lunge into a slidetackle and because he’s quite small he moves very well when the opponent is twisting and turning which makes it very hard to dribble past him.

– Very mature and composed in his defending, like he’s been doing it for a long time.

– Great passing ability and can drive the ball forward.

Top signing for us and would probably fit in very well. Bonus is he seem very good in the air which is a big surprise given his height. I think I’d still prefer Koulibaly but it looks dead so this is a really alternative good alternative.

Sign him up, I say!
 
The only issue of his height is when he comes up against the 6ft4/6ft5 donkeys teams in England like to shove up front occasionally, but in truth those are precisely the kind of teams that rarely cause us problems anyway.

I just had a quick look. Apparently 0 goals due to counters last season in the league. That doesn't sound right to me. I guess it depends on how you define it. 9 due to set pieces, but that presumably includes direct free kicks. I seem to remember (and could be mistaken) that we went through a period a few years ago where were weren't conceding many goals from corners, but only because we weren't conceding many corners. But when you looked into the percentage of corners that resulted in goals for the opposition, it was shockingly high.

and you need the ball to hoof it. We have 70% of the ball against those teams.

and in any case, you simply can't have perfect team. If you have tall centrebacks, we lack mobility which in our system is disaster.
 
Interesting YouTube vid, I can see about 4/5 times when Ottamendi would have gone to ground or made an absolute howler but the lad just stood up and did the job, plenty fast enough, I would rather this lad than give that twat at Napoli one fucking dollar from our petro fuelled human rights abusing coffers ;-)
 
I've seen a lot of comparisons for Koulibaly based on season under Gattuso which is unfair as it's an entire change of playstyle and he was unsettled having Manolas as a partner, only good games came when he partnered Maksimovic. So let's see a comparison of him under Carlo vs Koundé this year as a regular for Sevilla (who's system is at least dependent on possession and playing out the back, not exactly like Sarri's but similar-ish).

Won't be an issue yeah, also in such games our goal has always been to win the second balls if the aerial duels can't be won, won't really be an issue. Height is not a concern at all.

Yeah Koulibaly is definitely the best we can get as far as I'm concerned, but at some point you think we may have to sign someone else and this 21 year old does seem promising.
 
I'm actually hopeful Koundé's aerial success is indicative of good positioning as well as leaping prowess, as I feel that's the primary issue when we concede from crosses.

That's fair yeah, we cannot keep waiting, but I think getting a deal done for Koulibaly no matter the price is still the best option for us. Screw Napoli and ADL but it remains the best option.

I wouldn't mind Koundé at all, just that he wouldn't quite be the solution for now aside making up numbers (I could be entirely wrong tho, but it doesn't seem that way).
 
All we wanted last season was a fast CB who could defend against counters and read the game well enough to not make stupid errors, this lad fits that profile perfectly and yet all some people want to focus on is the fact that he’s, what, half an inch shorter than Otamendi? You’d think every team in the league has a 6ft5 target man up top the way some of you go on ffs
