Jules Koundé

A good video showcasing his talents in the final this year.

Doesn't jump in, showed good positioning and anticipation, willing to go no nonsense when necessary.

Also not necessarily important, but Sevilla had the third best defensive record in La Liga last season.

One of the better videos I’ve seen of Jules.
A few things that stand out:

– He has great defensive awareness and seem present pretty much constantly, quite the opposite of Stones and Otamendi. He sees the threat early so has very good positioning to intercept the ball or tackle the opponent.

– He prefers to stay on his feet rather than lunge into a slidetackle and because he’s quite small he moves very well when the opponent is twisting and turning which makes it very hard to dribble past him.

– Very mature and composed in his defending, like he’s been doing it for a long time.

– Great passing ability and can drive the ball forward.

Top signing for us and would probably fit in very well. Bonus is he seem very good in the air which is a big surprise given his height. I think I’d still prefer Koulibaly but it looks dead so this is a really alternative good alternative.

Sign him up, I say!

Looks the business imo.

Looked the part in the Europa as well in the games I saw.

I like his composure and his reading of the game.

That's fair yeah, we cannot keep waiting, but I think getting a deal done for Koulibaly no matter the price is still the best option for us. Screw Napoli and ADL but it remains the best option.

I wouldn't mind Koundé at all, just that he wouldn't quite be the solution for now aside making up numbers (I could be entirely wrong tho, but it doesn't seem that way).

"no matter the price" is definitely not the good option. "Screw Napoli and ADL" means "srew Napoli and ADL", that's it! We need a clear boundary and the discipline of execution.

I've seen a lot of comparisons for Koulibaly based on season under Gattuso which is unfair as it's an entire change of playstyle and he was unsettled having Manolas as a partner, only good games came when he partnered Maksimovic. So let's see a comparison of him under Carlo vs Koundé this year as a regular for Sevilla (who's system is at least dependent on possession and playing out the back, not exactly like Sarri's but similar-ish).

I think most on here knows Koulibaly right now is the better choice of the two. His stats speak for themselves, he’s experienced and a leader. What surprises me about these comparisons though is that they are quite equal. It’s not night and day difference and Koulibaly is 8 years older.

Another comparison here btw. Chose some City players from some of their better seasons. Laporte from 18/19, Otamendi 17/18, Stones 18/19, Vinnie 18/19. Kounde holds his own fine in aerial and ground duels. Not bad at all.

Ake is 49% aerial success last year and Garcia 35%...

Should look into this Stones fella. Could be a steal.

The only issue of his height is when he comes up against the 6ft4/6ft5 donkeys teams in England like to shove up front occasionally, but in truth those are precisely the kind of teams that rarely cause us problems anyway.

This is not a problem for us.

Since the Everton game in Pep's first season, we have stopped putting Centrebacks on the target man.

Instead the 6 is the person who competes for that ball. Fernandinho, Rodri or Gundogan. And they often lose because none of them are great in the air, but they fix the target man in place and then the 2 centrebacks pick up the flicked on header and mop up.

The key thing about those situations is there's never more than 2 runners going after the flicked on header, 90% of the time it is 1. So we almost always have a numerical advantage after the header.

Pep explained this in a press conference about 2 years ago, and we have conceded almost none of those long ball to big man goals since.

Set pieces are the one time our lack of height really makes us vulnerable, but there's solutions to that too.

I've not heard much about him, but he looks very good in the YouTube clips. He looks quick which is something we desperately need and can read the game. I like the look of this lad and it goes without saying now that we absolutely should never deal with Napoli again. I also like it that he is French and should pick up Laporte pretty quickly.

I'm just glad we've brought someone in who looks class and hopefully it will free some of the cash up to bring in some more players.

We only need to strengthen left back, central midfield and a striker now before the season starts....!
