There, I've said it.
The first 25 minutes of last night my jaw was dropping and my mouth was just hanging open. The passing and movement were just amazing to watch and we seriously could have had 3 goals (one a pen) in that part of the game. Our forwards were pressing all over their half and our FBs were right up the field just like Barca. This was against a team which was one of the main tips for the title this season (definitely Top 4). C'mon, playing Chelsea at home and they were playing like a championship side at the Etihad trying to nick a goal, which they did.
The problem, we took our foot off the pedal and kept trying to push it too hard when they retreated back to their 18 yard line. For some reason we stopped the high pressing game, maybe because they dropped so deep, maybe fitness, maybe complacency or over-confidence - I'm not sure which. In hindsight, probably we should have played it around the centre circle and forced them to come out to us. We were 1-0 up at the time and it was up to them to try and force the goal but we kept losing possession trying to force our way through a 10 man defence and let them build up their confidence.
I still think this City team has another gear they can step up into, one that we saw last night for the first 25 minutes. BM needs to sit the players down with a "before and after" dvd of those first 25 minutes and find out what went wrong and put the fix in. What I want to see is that 25 minutes sustained over a full match (or as near as possible) and I think it's going to start happening sooner rather than later.
I'm looking forward to the next few years with a big grin on my face even after losing last night.
