I know a lot more goes into a transfer than any of us will ever know but these reports always make me laugh. Like they've been given a heads up from Txiki while he continues searching under every sofa.

I don't think Kompany had even notably dipped, despite his injury and age. He'd play well, get injured, come back, look like he's never been out of the team, and then get injured again. And repeat. Whatever flaws that were present in his game in his later years were there prior for me. It's just he was so injury prone you were gambling on him being available all the time.

So if a crock like Kompany can still keep to his high levels at a later age with a horrible injury record, then there's no reason someone like Koulibaly can't either.

It's a good comparison but I think the context of the overall squad is also important. Kompany averaged about 40 games a season for his first 6 years and 20 games a season for his last 4 years. The price we'd pay for Koulibaly means we'd need for him to contribute more than 20 games a season I think, given the relative balance of the money around the squad and the available backup options.

Of course anything could happen and someone could come in and blow us out of the water with an offer to Koulibaly or Napoli but signs are positive.
