Kalvin Phillips | Joins City on a 6-year deal

We paid £8mil for Delph. We shouldn't be spending £60mil on someone to come in and "do a job" for us, in my opinion. I'd rather see the club put the £50mil we're likely to get for Jesus towards the midfield fund and bring in a Rolls Royce player, like a De Jong or someone who will develop into one, a la Bellingham. That would be the more beneficial move long term. Phillips has too many limitations to warrant such an outlay, again that's just my opinion.
But the Bellingham / FDJ transfer will happen or somebody else when Gundogan goes, completely irrespective of who we get or what we spend this summer on the Fernandinho replacement the 2 transfers are unconnected. If the club thought the money spent this summer restricted us next summer I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t spend it.

Ironically, you are correct, except for the exact wrong reasons -

1. the "narrative" in here is that for some reason, Kalvin phillips is a world class player who's worth 60m and anyone who says otherwise is a pathetic basement dwelling arsehole who shouldn't even hold opinions.
Do you often make up arguments others have made in your mind and then get upset about them? So strange. The vast majority of the discussion on here from Blues that like the signing is that he's a proven PL player that fits exactly the position we need exactly when we need it. If you've seen someone say Kalvin Phillips is world class (I haven't on this thread) then that person should be ignored.

I know it’s all about opinion but amazes me how many posters think they know what players are good enough for us better than Pep Guardiola. Pretty sure he’s got enough credit in the bank for us to trust his judgement.

Regards to fee, firstly the price is all just entirely speculation at the moment and secondly the club have shown previously they will walk away if they don’t think they are getting value.

I was totally OTT with my own views last summer when we didn’t sign a striker and gladly eaten my own words, it’s sometimes easy to forget we are the best ran club in the world with the best manager in the world. We’ve already addressed the biggest issue with Haaland and a special talent in Alvarez and we will sign a competent starting left back. We will literally never have it better than this!

Look, we're discussing a potential transfer and the opinions range from "he's an absolute monster and £60m is more than reasonable" to "he's dogshit and we can spend the money better elsewhere" and everything in between.

That makes for a far more interesting thread, for me, than the majority of the stuff on here.

Do you mean to tell me the thread would be more exciting if it was just a bunch of people unanimously nodding and saying "great business at any price"?

You judge a fee at the end of the players 5 year contract.

That would mean we would have nowt to discuss and moan about..

A large chunk of this forum thinks the longest serving and most decorated player in our squad is shit, and has at various points wanted to get rid of almost every player from our greatest ever side.

Pay no heed to the 'consensus' on here. It's no more of a place for considered debate than Twitter or any other social media platform.

He‘s not shit, he just got old.

Fernandinho‘s contract runs out at the end of the month. ;-)

It's the same thing.

Phillips will be there for when Rodri needs a rest, is injured, is out of form or simply when we play lesser opposition.

Unless you seriously think that Kalvin Phillips will be just as likely as Rodri to start the big games or that he'll end up with the same amount of appearances, I think you're splitting hairs.
I'd be willing to bet that Rodri and Phillips would start in the same team plenty of times. And that Phillips will end up with as many minutes as most of the other midfielders by the end of the season

It’s as if Pep, Txiki and our extensive global team of professional scouts and analysts have never heard of Palinha, and haven’t for whatever reason decided Phillips is a better bet.
Think I’ll go with their judgement rather than some random making strawman arguments on a forum

I just think it must get very boring to constantly post in a thread about someone you don't rate. A bit like why I don't post in X, Y and Z threads. If people have enough free time on their hands to do that then crack on. Just seems unusual.
Abit like that guy who makes the effort to go on the media thread every day, telling everyone he doesn’t read the media
