Sam Lee has some quotes from Kalvin in 'The Pathetic' today
Kalvin Phillips knows the situation.
“It’s probably the biggest week or so in my Man City career so far,” he says.
There is no ‘probably’ about it. If the 27-year-old is ever going to make a success of his time at the Etihad Stadium, then the seeds will have to be sown in this next run of games. His 2022-23 debut season at the club did not go as anybody expected: he made just 4 starts (2 of those coming in the Premier League after City had wrapped up the title with 3 games to go) and it became apparent that Pep Guardiola did not feel he could rely on him to start, or even come on as a substitute, in the vast majority of matches. So much so that City were open to him leaving in the summer, just 12 months after he arrived from Leeds United. Phillips did not want that, though, and has vowed to stay and make things work.
“When I came in for pre-season, I said I wanted to stay and give it another shot,” he revealed on Saturday. “In previous years a lot of players have done well in the second season and I had a talk with the club and they said that if I wanted to go out on loan they would be happy for me to do that. I just said no, it’s not something I am thinking of. I just want to concentrate on playing for Manchester City.”
