Not picking fights (and I realise it's kinda rhetorical) but the answer to both is quite simple.

They're on a contract - not their fault the clubs involved made the contract ridiculous
The club isn't necessarily actively "hanging on to the player" - in fact in Sterlings case Chelsea have found several clubs who want him, they just aren't in London which is where he wants to stay apparently
Point 2 is obviously down to personality, but the contract plays it's part. No way Kalvin is getting the sort of money we signed up to anywhere else.

Since Christmas he has featured in a bar in Leeds with his old Bielsa teammates ( not pissed) and liked on insta by a noodle bar he frequented.

Contract ends June 2028 so about a 25m left on his contract! Don’t think we will pay him of it be a loan again! Just can’t see any team paying anything for him with his past history with loans and his injury record
