He was always regarded as a midfielder and, when we signed him at the back end of 1978, he was touted as the replacement for Colin Bell that we'd been waiting for. We made a couple of signings (Conway and Viljoen) who never did the job to the necessary level, and missed out on one or two others who might have been decent (Gerry Francis failed a medical and Brian Talbot chose Arsenal instead). Bell himself came back but wasn't the same player and in any event couldn't stay fit.
Deyna mainly played into midfield in his first few months at the club, but often found the physical aspect of the English game too much for him in that position, and, remember, he was 31 when we signed him, so already past his peak. His best moments for City came in 1979/80, when Mal tried him up front. He was too inconsistent to win a regular place, but when on song gave an extra dimension to our play and had a reasonable scoring record.
