I agree, even employing full time on site security guard for a whole year would cost the equivalent of about 2 days net earnings for someone like him.

It's bizarre they aren't willing to do such a thing.

The article says they were using it more like a holiday home than a residence so maybe didn’t keep any sentimental items there. Probably cheaper just to pay the increase in insurance premiums than year round security.
