Key Bridge, Baltimore, has collapsed.

civil and structural engineer Julian Carter, says bridges such as the one in Baltimore are "very weak at points".

He says the "catastrophic collapse" of much of the bridge was because everything along the structure is "interconnected".

Other large bridges may have central piers where the main structure is disconnected from the rest, but in this case the interconnected nature of the bridge means "when you take out one part of it, the interconnected system fails".

Mr Carter says the "lightweight structure" was likely tested at some point for a ship collision.

This may have been suitable at the time, he says, but container ships are now "twice the size".

The engineer adds that he expects many ports and bridge piers will need to be risk assessed for similar situations.
You could say, "flimsy".

All bridges are, by default, interconnected. To varying extents. They are also not built to be collision proof. There are measures and considerations, but ultimately this wasn't felled by a gust of wind, it was a pretty substantial force that would really take some stopping.

Given the ship appears to be on the City side of the water, going through a fairly narrow channel (between the 2 bridge piers), you'd think the ship would be under the control of a pilot, most big ships are under pilot control in harbours. Looking at google earth, the container port appears to be on the northeast side of the port, which puts the ship hitting that bit seem a bit strange.

Fuck of with that shite.
He's only saying what will occur when Mango Mussolin wakes up.

Trump won't be concerned with casualties. He'll rant about infrastructure collapsing because of lack of investment from Biden (which is BS) who's more concerned with jailing him over the running the country.

Ships are very difficult to stop once they are moving, that bridge didn't stand a chance.

Very worrying that you could see a fair number of car headlights at the time of impact.

There will be a lot of casualties and fatalities.

I thought it had been said that there were 2 pilots on board.

In a country of 341.33 million people, how come the presidential candidates are both pensioners (77 & 81) - one a crook and the other senile.

That's a debate for downstairs in the political sewers board. However your point is more than valid.

With regards to the tragedy it looks even more shocking now the sun has come up.

A similar incident happened in the 70's here in Tampa Bay on the Sky Way Bridge linking St Petersburg with Bradenton - a tanker hit the bridge in thick fog. Brought the bridge down including a school bus that was driving along that section at the same time....

Because in a country of 341 million people the most important thing in an election is being known by 341 million people.

You can be known because you're the first black candidate, the son or wife of a former president, former vice-presiden or a celebrity game show host, but you have to be a household name.
